Neurologists have identified temporal lobe epilepsy as the cause of religious experiences (hyper-religiosity, talking with God, seeing Jesus, etc.)
So maybe "born again" people have a brain disfunction that causes their condition. That could explain President Bush's warped thinking,
It also could explain why "born again" people just can't see reality. Their brains won't let them. Religious people should be off to see their doctor ASAP.

Nice anaology Randy, are born again Christians like people sufering from impairments in the perception or expression of reality - schizophrenia?
Both claim to hear voices - most are paranoid - they think that the whole world is against them.
I suppose that god, in its more extreme manifestation could be compared to bizarre delusions and speaking in toungs could be compared to disorganized speech.
This is looking good. In very extreme religious orders and schizophenia, the onset of symptoms typically occurs in young adulthood, with approximately 0.5% of the population affected (well I know the figures for schiz, but not for born agains lol).
Diagnosis is based on the patient's self-reported experiences and observed behavior. No laboratory test for schizophrenia exists - just like Born again christianity...
Studies suggest that genetics, early environment, neurobiology and psychological and social processes are important contributory factors in both. Current psychiatric research is focused on the role of neurobiology, but a clear organic cause has not been found. Due to the many possible combinations of symptoms, there is debate about whether the diagnosis represents a single disorder or a number of discrete syndromes. For this reason, Eugen Bleuler termed the disease the schizophrenias (plural) when he coined the name.
Despite its etymology, schizophrenia is not synonymous with dissociative identity disorder, previously known as multiple personality disorder or split personality; in popular culture the two are often confused. Likewise Born again Christianity is often confused with more moderate forms of religion.

Your video link reminds me of the type of ignorant thinking displayed by those naysayers who said the world was flat when Christopher Columbus sought backing for his voyage.
As for being born again, have you never heard the expression "I feel like a new person", or "I started my life over again"? These expressions mean that a person had an opportunity to make changes in their life which made their life all the better. Often, people will say this when referring to recovering from an addiction or moving on to a happier life after a difficult break-up with someone. These expressions are not meant to be taken literally, as in someone literally becomes a new person and is no longer the person they were, or they begin life as an infant again. Same goes with being born again. Anyone with a clue understands that when someone is born again, they have given their life to God and their life is guided by the teachings and example set by Jesus Christ. But then, you already knew that, and your sole intent was to poke fun at Christians. I already knew that, but answered anyway, because I am born again and my new self stands up for what is right, even when it is unpopular to do so and will get me a thumbs down. I feel sorry for people who feel so threatened by Christian beliefs that they have to make fun of them. It really is quite sad.

What theists mean when they say they have been "born again" ,
is that they have lost confidence in their ability to cope with reality, and have succeeded in hypnotizing themselves into a psychotic belief that some invisible creature is going to remove all their problems, and do everything for them.
It's a deranged gimmick for avoiding personal responsibility.---If things go wrong---the devil did it ,---- if things go right---God did it.---Hallelujah.
It's like their brain went on an extended vacation, and they have learned to enjoy not allowing that organ to function the way it does in sane people.
Hallelujah.
