...Hmm. That is a tough question. While brakes are extremely important and even if you have the best braking system out there you can still burn those brakes up by using them too much.
...With that being said I believe the driver needs to be disciplined enough to not rely on the brakes and work the corners more. To work the corners you need that "side grip" (as Rusty would say) to be able to work the corners.
...Now if you have the "side grip" then how you "feather" the gas pedal coming out of the corners will determine the forward grip.
...So I am going to go against the majority opinion and say handling. The driver needs to be disciplined and save his brakes. His brakes should be used for out braking the opponent in the curves as a passing technique.
...Handling is more important. If you don't have handling you will eventually burn the brakes up trying to be competitive.

It's all about those brakes at this track. You'll notice that the commentator focus more on brakes at this race than any other. It's those long straightaways and sharp corners with minimal banking. A driver needs to take care of his brakes to win at this track.
I will add this however..... The better a car handles, the less brakes the driver will need getting into the corner. So while long lasting brakes are probably the most important, a good handling car will help them last longer.

They are all very important but one more key factor at Martinsville is driving style. How they drive affects the line they are comfortable running. That line they run determines how they enter and exit the corner which in turn affects when and where they brake. One saying at Martinsville is that you have to slow down to go fast. What that means is that by getting off the throttle earlier on entry allows you to get back on it sooner on exit. That allows the driver to be heading into the straightaway with more momentum. This way of driving the paperclip is also easier on brake use and wear.

Yes the brakes. The brake package with the larger rotots and pads will come into play especially if there is much bumping to the front of the car and the brake vents get damaged. I agree with you asker!!!!
