Stupid comes from the Latin verb "Stupeo" (stupeo-es, stupui, stupère) and the original meaning was "astonished, amazed".
"Stupidus puer"was a young boy "struck dumb with amazement".
It's not an "idiot" (from latin "idiota"= ignorant, rude)
With Cicero, Ovide and Catullus it was used with a negative meaning of "stultus" (silly, nonsensical).

This is hilarious!!!Well forthe sake of using it they just say it out of the blue, but mind you the word stupid can be expressed in different moods and tones. If you meant to be critical, funny, irritated, angry, persistent, easy, uncomfortable, carefree, and innocent. See the word stupid can come in different degrees too of delivery, if it was said in a streched way like when you say stuuuuuupiddd, then this would mean you are really annoyed and busted out,but if its a short stupid, it was just an expression not to wanting to be heard, but what does stupid really mean?Well,it could mean ignoramus, uneducated, illiterate, unknowing,or simply blank.......so If I were one of them I refrain from using it,as a discourse marker yes, but not to call someone or brand someone stupid....a heavy word indeed!!!

Have you been in in the bathroom for the last 10 years? Yes it can be used in that way. And some gay people get all bejiggity about it and some don't. Personally I don't. Its who uses it and how they use it, not the word, that can be offensive. @CODY FUNNY HOW YOU CONVENIENTLY LEFT OF THE NEXT SET OF MEANINGS FROM MERRIAM WEBSTER. 4. a: HOMOSEXUAL (Gay Men) b: Of, relating to, or used by Homosexuals Its no longer considered slang.
