For Christians, Muslims, Jehovas, and many other religions, it could be said they believe "life begins after death", as they are anticipating going to heaven, mecca, being saved, etc. Why are they giving up the good things in life they could have now, with the idea that "Life begins when you die!" and you meet up with your "God", etc.
If this never happens, won't they be screwed?

I think it is one of the main reasons the planet is being stripped and destroyed systematically. Leaders of large countries who have ridiculous primitive beliefs, do not care about it. They believe they are due a better and permanent life after they die so why give a crap about anything now?

Yes, if life after death does not happen then everyone who lived accordingly will have been screwed...unless of course you count the fact that even if life after death was pure myth, people who lived according to that idea will have lived more meaningful, compassionate and constructive lives, and that counts for something.
I do not think that life begins after you die. In fact if you wait till then you will be too late to prevent another immediate incarnation and there is a lot of uncertaintly in being reborn and starting out all over again.
I say this: Life begins right NOW!!!
Life begins whenever you become conscious enough to understand what living means, and then to use your own innate wisdom to determine how to live so as to optimize the possibilities of being alive.
If you wait till death for this, you may not be in any condition to deal with it.
We must all deal with death and the fact that we are all going to die in the present, in the NOW.
It is this facing of reality that imparts happiness to the individual. This accepting of the natural order is what gives us peace of mind.
There is no "life after" anything. There is just this moment~

Life here on earth is about 80 years or so they say thats the average. I had rather serve the Lord Jesus Christ for that time than burn in hell for eternity. Thats what the Bible says will happen to all who do not believe in Jesus. Think about it. If God is real and John 3:16 is right you are in a lot of trouble. If it is not, All I have lost is about 80 years, and comparing that with eternity doesn't make 80 sound that long. But that world eternity sounds like a long time. Think about it.

Life means together.
Physical Life = Body & Soul together
Spiritual Life = Holy Spirit (God) & Soul together
According to the New Testament Eternal or Spiritual Life begins at the moment when the Holy Spirit itself enters the human body and unites with the Soul.
So, Spiritual Life must begin while we are physically alive.
Clear as mud?

Although they probably don't understand WHY, the promise is not of 'this life', but of the resurrection, which Yahshua showed to all. It is the 'lot' of man to die a physical death, but to be resurrected at the new creation of things, thus not being subject to the 'second death', the death of the soul.
That is part of the root of faith, that there is something better down the road.

In the case of most religions, you are giving up the pleasures of this world but, in the case of Christianity, you are not. The reason is that as a Christian, when you live as God asks you to live, "Love one another", then you receive what is called the fruits of the spirit.
love
joy
peace
patience
kindness
goodness
faithfulness
gentleness
self-control
Worldly pleasure only brings momentary happiness. The joy that comes from God is eternal.

I am a Christian, one of Jehovah's Witnesses. I don't believe "Life begins after Death".
We do believe that there is a hope for the future, but we still get much joy out of our lives in the here and now.
Thanks for the concern though.

We don't give up good things. What is good by your meaning? We enjoy life, worship god, pray, Have fun, live life to the fullest, then when we die we go to heaven. So if we get screwed in the end, we would have enjoyed life on earth :)

FYI, Mecca is a real city. There's a temple there, and Muslims pray towards it five times a day. Muslims do not believe they go to Mecca when they die.
