It is possible (Lk. 23:39-43), but highly unlikely, especially if you are planning on one. The longer you wait, the less likely you will b able to repent, and God is not to be mocked by putting off repentance. And death can and often does come very suddenly.
One must act while they can, and not presume upon the grace of almighty God.
(Heb 2:3) "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;"
(2 Cor 6:1-2) "We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. {2} (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)"

I think they can be. It all comes down to the person's heartfelt motivations. If someone lives their life saying, "I'll just convert on my deathbed, that way I can live the way I want," then probably not. But, if a person truly feels repentance, then I believe that they would be accepted.
Many will cite the thief on the cross, but they forget the context. While that man may have heard Jesus preach, he was ill-equipped to understand what Jesus' sacrifice truly entailed. The thief saw the injustice of Jesus' crucifixion. He was also truly sorry for what he had done to land there. There are some deathbed conversions that will lack that aspect of regret.
Truth be told, no one knows for sure if they will be accepted under those circumstances. Why chance it? Why not just truly open your heart and ask Jesus to reveal Himself? The Bible says He will do that for those who truly wish to see Him.

Yes you are going to get many Theif on the Cross answers but I bet the theif on the cross probably never met Jesus before and when he was dieing there on the cross he came to saving knowledge. I think with death bed confessions it all depends on what your knowledge was before you died. What most people fail to realize in repentance and convesions to Christianity is that Jesus Christ draws you to Him. Jesus causes you to repent. You don't just all the sudden decide you want to repent. The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ works on your mind and soul convincing you that you need to repent. If you reject that convicting Spirit then you are denying Jesus Christ. If you continually deny Jesus Christ convicting Spirit and then at your death bed you say you want to repent I believe it may be too late.
However just the opposite can be said for a person that has never had the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ convicting them. If a person was on their death bed and hears the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the first time I believe then and only then would a death bed confession be genuine.

The Lord is long suffering. He doesn't want any to perish. Asking for forgiveness washes away the sin, not the memory. God has the ability to do both, forget and forgive. Could heinous, sadistic crimes be forgiven? Yes. Can prideful greed or gluttonous lust be forgiven? Yes. Can unwillingness to surrender to the Holy Spirit be forgiven? Never. The Lord says if you aren't for me, you're against me.

I suppose if they are sincere. But what if you don't get that chance?
And more important, why would you wait your whole life to live for the Lord? I regret the wasted years that I didn't have Jesus in my life, I can't imagine a lifetime without him.
I wouldn't have had the oppurtunity to pray for anyone, and to have the peace that I have now.

Yes with a stipulation they truly must feel it in their heart to merely say the words is not enough. True faith if felt not known!

God looks at the true motives behind each confession. He judges the validity.
