I read all of these questions here, "Why do Catholics believe this when it's so dumb?" and "Why do Christians hate everything but themselves?" and "Why doesn't everyone accept that _insert religion here_ is the one correct religion?" and I just don't understand why people can't just accept each other's differences and get along. Where does it say, in ANY religious text or doctrine, "Be a total jerk about religion and you will totally save peoples' souls."?

Ted - Jesus wasn't a dick. And I'm pretty sure "Love your enemies" is supposed to be part of the Christian doctrine.
Betty Boop - If you don't care, why did you comment? :-p

Jouster - I understand that the "Christians" I am referencing do not (or, please God, should not) represent true Christianity. And while I also agree that a person cannot believe in being, for example, both pro-choice and pro-life, I still think it is important for people to accept each other's differences and respect those differences as well without attacking them.

Thanks Amanda. It doesn't say that anywhere.
Questions and attitudes like that put many on the defense.
Acceptance and Unity are the way to go!!
Namaste!

there is alot of money to be made in so called christianity.. and the "mold" is made by argument... so the more right you seem to be the more position you can get (and ultimately more money, social status, admiration, etc) that's why the religious types try to fit the "mold of contemporary christianity" and argue to the death of what they think is right because it makes money, and attracts a crowd. I hope that clears it all up for you but here is an analogy.... if you went to a car show where there was a heated debate over chevy ford and dodge, who wins? the most sales wins! just like the preacher on the pulpit, he's trying to sell his point and people there are buying into it!

I believe that a person can't be accepting to all religions because each religion is different and a person can't accept two different things, like being against abortion AND being for abortion. It would be so hypocritical. Anyways, I think that the so called "Christians" that you are talking about here, are not even Christians at all. A person with strong faith would not be demanding or total jerks. Clearly, you are not looking at a TRUE christian.

because catholics and christians bring thier beliefs to question and the validity of those beliefs because the try to prostheletize everyone, push their christian based morality on everyone else without realizing that they are not the only game in town, nor are they the right game in town for everyone.
if they are going to claim that they are, then everyone else has the right to point out that they are not or poke holes in thier beliefs to discredit this notion.
christians aren't the only ones either, muslims are too but I think they are really discounted becasue while thier goal might be to forcibly convert people on pain of death, christians are using the laws of our societies, extortion of third world countries' poverty and just general brainwashing of thier children and attempts to hide logic so they are an every day issue.
forcing or using trickery to get people to follow your religion is just plain wrong.
those religions that don't try to blur the distinction between evidence/logic and faith don't get ridiculed or attacked in this manner. People don't crap on pagans, or jews or buddists because they don't force you to believe or threaten you with hell.
EDIT: also amanda, you forget one cardinal rule about YA:
THIS IS THE INTERNET, A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE GO TO SLANDER EACH OTHER ANONYMOUSLY WITHOUT FEAR OF REPRISAL.

I do not think everyone views it this way... but religion in the middle east for instance is one of the big and major causes of WAR. You are being an idealist if you say why cannot we accept everyones religion,,, yes in a more perfect world but unfortunately it probably will never come to this

the point is Christians don't hate. i don't hate atheist
i just try to understand their point of view. anyone
who comes to R & S should view it as a forum. but that
isn't what we get here. how can the word be "rammed"
down the throat? often for a answer one gets the word
" drink" does that have more than one meaning? so why
come to slam anyone. no Moslem has yet proved to me
that they are full of love. when all respect each other then
there will be peace.

Alot of people are hypocrites because they think that they religion is better then the other. This is why there is so much problem in the world to much hate and anger and people need to realize that God is all about love. We are all suppose to love one another even if we believe in other religions are diferrent races whatever it is. God does not hate and if anyone has hate in they are heart it is not God that they are following it is Satan.

People are rude about religions because religions form the foundation of people's belief systems.
Since most religions are metaphysical in nature, and there is no verifiable evidence for metaphysical beings, religion is based upon speculation.
If my belief system is based upon speculation there will always be a degree of doubt or uncertainty about it, however I persuade myself of the "truth" of what I believe.
When that doubt is brought to the forefront of my conscious mind it creates anxiety. When I am anxious, I am more prone to attack than to reason.

The reason people bicker about what belief is right is because they are not focussed on what they should be focussed on. Im sorry to inform anyone who swears by one faith, but heaven dont have substations of denominations, heaven is heaven. Jesus doesnt grant entry to heaven to the best defender of any certain faith, he grants entry to those who believe and serve and trust and love Jesus. We need to love one another as brothers and sister in Christ, and not be concerned with worldly points of veiw, but be concerned with wearing the armor of God and knowing the truth in the bible and witnessing to the lost and putting God first instead of our worldy pride.

Actually, I'm an atheist and although I do try hard to remain respectful of other people's right to believe any damn fool thing they please, it persistently angers me that religion purports to benefit the believer while filling their head with obsolete superstitions. Fundamentalist Christianity works relentlessly to discredit both truth and knowledge, and seeks to bring a premature end to human civilization. I do my best to hold back my frustration with such persistent superstition and ignorance, but sometimes I just can't contain myself. Then I am rude.
