Whenever I feel sad or depressed or really upset I cut myself. I'll stop for a while then I'll start doing it again because it feels like thats the only way I can cope with how I'm feeling. It feels like i have an addiction, but thats not possible is it?

Not religeous so i won't see a priest, im not mental, and it's not for attention as most people do it for.

It is a mental illness...and yes it can become addicting for some who do it. I have done it myself but only a few times it never became habit and I found out the underlying problem was severe depression and anxiety, the anxiety kicked in and a little cut helped relieve the pressure inside. I have not done that for years and I also kicked the anti depressants as well this past year..I would recommend seeing your dr, and getting a prescription for a anti depressant to help curb those thoughts, as well talking to someone can help get to the root of the problem as well. In no way are antidepressants the cure all but they can help get you back on your feet so to speak and then when your feeling more in control you can slowly go off them and it is easier to control your moods then once they are a little more stabalized.

Actually it can be an additiction. Due to variances in brain chemistry, some people experience a rush or high in response to pain. Some neurologists believe that endorphins (Morphine-like chemicals produced by the body) are involved, Others believe that the pain response actually triggers a sequence of neuro-chemical reactions that help to correct the imbalance.
Currently the only treatment is through prescription medications, and those particular meds can only be prescribed by a psychiatrist.

Cutting and self mutilation are very dangerous diseases. They are signs of depression, and even bipolar disorder. These two things can lead to even more harmful issues like binge drinking, drug abuse and suicide attempts. It is important that you speak to someone right away. Talk to a parent, teacher, clergyman. I have a friend who cut herself for years before it exploded into almost killing herself. She has gotten help and is being treated for depression and anxiety disorder. She is very glad that she took these steps after many years.
You're doing the right thing by trying to figure out what is going on with yourself. Please take the next step and get yourself help. There is nothing to be ashamed of. You are not doing anything wrong, you are not a bad person. A strong person is one that can admit they need help.
Good luck

My little sister had a problem with cutting herself as a young teenager...
she seeked councelling...
it isnt a "disease".... but it's from emotional pain that seems to go away when you inflict physical pain on yourself.
I'd seek help immediately!

yes, it's like an addiction. it's almost impossible to stop by yourself sometimes. you need treatment, similar to drug addiction treatment. talk to your parents or school counselor. you need help, to stop this (harmful) addiction, take action to get the help you need.

To your question, the answer is "Yes".
Talk about this with your family doctor. He/she can refer you to a psychiatrist or a psychologist to help you deal with this condition!

Another great question for Mr. Obvious.
Seek help kid and tell mommy and daddy what you're doing for attention.
