What do the numbers on different types of pasta mean (such as spaghetti is #8, thin spaghetti #9, and et c.), and how did the numbers come about? Thanx in advance for the info!

the numbers are more like stock numbers. the same pasta maybe sold in different areas under different names, but when wholesalers order and when warehouses ship the controls are done by the numbers not the name on the boxes.

I think this relates to the size of the noodle. For example, spaghetti #8 is thicker than spaghetti #3.

Not sure but it probably refers to the 'die' they use when pressing the pasta.
