Seeing that the circumstances under which that beloved hymn was composed (google "John Newton") was an adult conversion to faith, by grace ...
... and that we believe "all [from God] is grace", as St. Therese of Lisieux wrote ...
... and that we also believe we're justified by grace?
Otherwise, wouldn't we be singing "Amazing Works"?
(I'm on a "hymn" theme today, I guess)

John Lemon, "Morning Has Broken" was an old Gaelic melody, with lyrics by Eleanor Farjeon, 1931. Cat Stevens merely sang his own arrangement of it.

I would sure hate to think that we couldn't sing "Amazing Grace". . . That one was sung at my wifes funeral Mass.

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tr.im/Fu4Iz
Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.
Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

Yes, we sing Amazing Grace at Mass frequently.
The opening line is Catholic doctrine - Amazing grace, how swwet the sound that saved a wretch like me.
Poor Ted is misinformed.

Ted is incorrect here,it is a fact of Christianity from it`s conception that we are redeemed by the grace of God in Jesus Christ and this grace was not merited by us in any way but is God`s gift freely bestowed.
There could be nothing wrong with singing this tribute to God`s mercy and grace.

If it is pleasing to God why should it be bad for us?

'Morning Has Broken' is another great christian song.
Too bad that Cat Stevens, the composer & singer, is now muslim, Yusuf Islam.
* Edit * - Thanks for the info, appreciate it & Bless you.

Sure, why not. With all the abuse in the Church today, I can't see how singing "Amazing Grace" would be a problem.

Sure. In fact, we believe in "Sola Gratia" (Grace Alone) rather than "Sola Fide" (Faith Alone)
