He was baptized as a symbol. Baptism in itself is a symbol for the washing away of the old man-or our worldly sinful bodies. If you notice, the Spirit of God (as a dove) came down to Jesus only after he was baptized. Jesus had a sinful body just like the rest of us. He just never fell to the temptation like we have. Remember, Jesus was born to a sinful mother, thus has a sinful body. He was baptized so that His "sinful" body could be cleaned and made good enough for the Spirit that was given to him without measure.

makeme says: "...he was fully human and fully God, so he did need to go through all of the different traditional ceremonies as a Jew...."

If that's the case, then Jesus would have immersed himself periodically in the mikveh as all Jews did at that time. Orthodox Jews continue to use the mikveh at designated times. Baptism originates from the ritual use of the mikveh. http://judaism.about.com/od/sexinjudaism/a/familypuritylaw.htm

Jesus also must have married and had children. The 1st of the 613 commandments was "to be fruitful and multiply." All Jews married in their teens or not later than their 20s. If their wife didn't produce children, the law required that the man take a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th wife. Jesus would have had NO followers whatsoever without having a family.

From "Judaism for Everyone" by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach:
Christianity idealized non-family life in the epistles of Paul: “It is well for a man not to touch a woman. But because of the temptation to immorality, each man should have his own wife… I say this by way of confession, not a command. I wish that all were (celibate) as I myself am” (1 Cor. 7:1-7). By contrast, the ancient Rabbis of the Talmud taught that one of the first things asked of a soul in judgment after its time on the earth is, “Did you fulfill your duty with regard to establishing a family?” A man could not become the Jewish High Priest unless he was married (Yoma 2a), and a man could not be a judge of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish high court, unless he had children, “since they teach him compassion.”

Jesus, the only Son of God, was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River to give us the example of how we should follow his example by a public proclamation of faith and the symbolic cleansing by water to signify our inner cleansing by the Blood of Christ.

for anyone to be the son of someone they have to firstly carry their genes or they are adopted. now for you to carry their genes they will have to impregnate your mother. dna testing in this case will be futile, no jesus around today nor is there any god genes available to match.
baptized?
he must have sinned prior to that, remember you can only get into heaven after you have been baptized, according to christianity, therefore it was imperative for their religion to continue that their leader was also baptized.

Many of the things that Jesus did here on earth were examples for us to follow. Also, he was fully human and fully God, so he did need to go through all of the different traditional ceremonies as a Jew, here he established one for Christians.

As a Jew, Jesus had a dedication in the temple, where sacrifice was made by his family in gratitude to God that He had been born. He also had a Bar Mitzvah, and read from his Haf-Torah portion in the temple. He celebrated passover, regularly and prayed often to His Father.

Yes, Jesus is the Son of God (and therefore, fully God). He was baptized to show that He was also fully man.

Jesus was not baptized.

Jesus was Jewish and baptism is a Christian practice. Christianity did not develop until after Jesus was killed by the Romans.

If I'm not mistaken (and I probably am), it comes down to being obedient to God the Father. I had initially thought it was marking the beginning of his ministry, but then I remembered the comment when he was younger about having to be about his fathers business.... so that didn't fit.
