I have just moved my cat from my old home to my new home (she'd been living at my parents home) and it was a long trip (about six hours) and now she is terrified. She keeps hiding and won't eat. I know this is to be expected but I want to help her adjust. The other cat living here, my husbands, is very friendly. He has been whining because we won't put the two of them in the same room. He sits by the bathroom door, waiting for her to come out. He wants so badly to play with her!! But she keeps hissing at him and backing away, she won't give him the time of day! What can I do to help my cat get used to her new surroundings and stop being so scared? I can only drag her out from under the bed so many times!!

We had a similar problem when we moved. The vet told us to leave him alone and not pay attention to him. If you coddle her she will only think that her being afraid is justified.

Also, there is an introductory process you should follow when introducing a new pet. Keep them separated at first, try feeding them by the door so they associate each others smell with positive things. After the hissing has stopped behind the closed door, open the door just enough so they can see each other (use a door stop to keep them from opening the door). Encourage playing around the door and with each other. Please see the articles below for more information.

In introducing older cats, one should remember to take the younger cat to the older cat. Then, while introducing, if the cat has had a litter, make sure that you preface the name with Mrs.

If the cat is fixed and has had a litter prior to being fixed, it is introduced as Mrs Whatever Her Name Is.

If there has been no litter, MS or Miss is popular.

With a male cat, if it has been fixed, you may call him Sissy Boy or Twinkle Toes. If the male cat has not been fixed, Tom or You Useless Miserable Blankedy Blank is always popular.

This question has been asked many times here. Use the search function at the top of this page to search for "introducing cats", "new cat", etc, and I'm sure you'll find more answers than you can ever use.
