In days of old and sailing ships the toilet was in front of the ship and hole you sat on to do your business.

Because it was traditionally sited toward the front (head) of a ship.
And nowadays you bang your head in a toilet on a small boat when you stand up.

Why do they call anything what they do, the floor/ground is the deck, a wall is a bulkhead, the ceiling is an overhead, steps are a ladder in a ladderwell and they don't fill out forms they fill out chit.
The Marines have their own language too, "Friiiied Fish" means Right Face, "Laayyuft Fish" means left face, "Hep Howp Reeep Ho ya Loft" means one two three four your left.
The Army speaks English, just with lots of acronyms.
