The soul is the immaterial part of us that survives beyond the death of our bodies. Christians believe it belongs to God and possesses immortality. It is the core of our being... who we are. It is different than our spirit, which is our controlling influence... the center of our emotions and source of our passions. Many think of the soul and the spirit as being one and the same. The Bible says they are separate and different (Hebrews 4:12 ).

I don't believe they are the same. In my culture, it is believed that everything on earth has a spirit, a living essence that moves on to the inevitable, wondrous place we call heaven. But the only creatures on earth with a soul are humans, because a spirit can be broken, but only souls can be judged for right and wrong, good and evil, light and darkness. Humans are the only creatures that God gave a logical, thinking mind to, they are the only ones who may choose what they wish to do. That is what separates us from animals, the only thing. Souls are judged based on the mind's choices in life, and it is the only thing that can be sent to heaven or hell. You will never find an animal in hell, because they don't have souls.

(Genesis 2:7) And Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul. The person himself is a soul. So when a person dies, a soul dies.(Ezekiel 18:4) Look! All the souls—to me they belong. As the soul of the father so likewise the soul of the son—to me they belong. The soul that is sinning—it itself will die. The soul and spirit are not the same thing. The spirit is the breath of life that God breaths into a person so they begin living. Here is an interesting excerpt from the book Insight on the Scriptures: Breath; Breath of Life; Life-Force. The account of the creation of man states that God formed man from the dust of the ground and proceeded to “blow [form of na·phach′] into his nostrils the breath [form of nesha·mah′] of life, and the man came to be a living soul [ne′phesh].” (Ge 2:7; see SOUL.) Ne′phesh may be translated literally as “a breather,” that is, “a breathing creature,” either human or animal. Nesha·mah′ is, in fact, used to mean “breathing thing [or creature]” and as such is used as a virtual synonym of ne′phesh, “soul.” (Compare De 20:16; Jos 10:39, 40; 11:11; 1Ki 15:29.) The record at Genesis 2:7 uses nesha·mah′ in describing God’s causing Adam’s body to have life so that the man became “a living soul.” Other texts, however, show that more was involved than simple breathing of air, that is, more than the mere introduction of air into the lungs and its expulsion therefrom. Thus, at Genesis 7:22, in describing the destruction of human and animal life outside the ark at the time of the Flood, we read: “Everything in which the breath [form of nesha·mah′] of the force [or, “spirit” (ru′ach)] of life was active in its nostrils, namely, all that were on the dry ground, died.” Nesha·mah′, “breath,” is thus directly associated or linked with ru′ach, which here describes the spirit, or life-force, that is active in all living creatures—human and animal souls. This spirit or breath of live is simply the life force that God puts in each thing to give it life. It is not a personal extension of the individual. It is simply the life force that returns to God when the creature dies. Hence it ceases to live.

spirit and soul describe two different aspects of a person.
someone could be said to be high in spirit and they would be a happy, or energetic person. someone could be said to be soulful and they would be contemplative and to listen to soulful music for example it would inspire our emotions.

this is how we have spirit and soul, hey are not things to be possessed, but attributes or personalities a person has, or can have.

to say they are something that moves on is contradictory to our very essence and natures.

to also assume that we have souls above animals is a specieist attitude to hold. other animals have logic in differing degrees.

we are animals, we live, we develop characteristics, we die. thats it

Let’s understand that man is a tripartite being, that is, he is composed of three parts - body, soul and spirit. I Thessalonians 5:23. The first part is material being, the other two are non-material. With a spirit man is capable of God-consciousness; with a soul he is capable of self-consciousness; with a body he is capable of world-consciousness. Only God's Word can divide between the soul and the spirit. Hebrews 4:12.

Yes, they are in essence the same. Some say spirit some say soul. Our body is just a vessel for the soul to reside. That's how death is possible. Our body is shrugged off and our soul (or who we are) goes back to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ to be judged according to the works and faith combined while on earth.

We Are triune either way.

Sometimes it is worded body, mind (soul), and spirit
or body, mind (will), and soul (or spirit).

Some of the words are used exchangably, but still
mean a similar relationship.

This is a good link to explain it.
