D stands for digital like the Canon 30D, 300D, etc. so you have looked into the Canon 400D a DSLR camera. A great DSLR by the way.

To combat the "gray market" Canon released the same camera with different names.

USA: Canon Rebel Digital XTi

Japan: Canon EOS Kiss Digital X

Elsewhere: Canon EOS 400D

A "gray market" camera is one bought at a lower price than the licensed importer pays for it, imported and then sold at a lower price. While not illegal, it is unethical since the buyer is never told that his camera warranty is only good in the country of purchase. So an importer buys cameras in Taiwan, imports them to the USA and undersells legitimate importers. You buy it and when you need warranty service you have to send it back to Taiwan.
