I want to know if teflon gives off fumes if it is used in normal cooking. I have been told that it isnt harmful to birds unless it is heated to a very high temperature. Also what about baking? Is it safe to use it in the oven at 350? I always put my bird in another room and close the door when I cook as well as use the stove hood vent. Has anyone had a problem when doing this?

What you were told was correct. I use teflon with birds and have never had any problems. It's about being a good cook! You never allow any type of cookware to overheat/burn. I've baked many a time with teflon without any problems at 350.

Teflon can kill all birds immediately. fumes from other products coated with Teflon, (pans, irons and ironing board covers) can also kill a parrot. Even fumes generated by oven cleaner can kill. Any cookware labeled "nonstick" emits an odorless fume that when heated can kill, new research now shows that they are emitted at low levels of heat and do not have to be overheated. Using Teflon bake wear in the oven runs the same risk with the fumes. I always have my African Grey in a different room with the doors closed when I am cooking, but it would be better to not have Teflon coated pans and use stainless steel instead, it would be much safer.

Yes, it does. Teflon will emit fumes anywhere in the 250-350 degree range. It will emit far more if it is heated to even higher temperatures, but it will emit some none the less even in normal cooking conditions.

It's best to just play it safe and continue to do what you are doing.

You may want to also think about not using the cooking bags that they have for oven use. They are also made of Teflon in order to be used in the oven and can possibly kill a bird. As long as the birds are in another room when you are cooking, they should be ok.
