I have been trying for a year to rehome my border collie who is "difficult". Even rescue homes have rejected her! I can no longer look after her and am desperate...and I don't use that word lightly.

Unfortunately, the idea that the pets we seek out and bring into our home are disposable is far too common. Try your local Animal Welfare League. Try a trainer. Try anything and everything else before the eternal visit to the vet. You should consider not being a dog owner again. Dogs are not perfect. However people tend to be far worse a greater percentage of the time. Quite often the owners are the reason for the dogs misbehavior without knowing they are setting the dogs up for failure. In your case - death for your pet.

It's not illegal, but is it the right thing to do? If by "difficult" you mean aggressive and has bitten people, then rescues would indeed reject her. They can't afford to take the chance of placing the dog in a situation where she might injure someone. Most rescues are so swamped with dogs that are adoptable, that they can't put resources into ones that require rehabilitation, and would always require a special environment. In that case, having her euthanized might be the best thing to do.
If she's not a biter, then I would be tempted to seek the help of a professional trainer, in the hopes that you could possibly resolve the issue, and keep her.
Otherwise, taking her to your local animal shelter is probably the only option left.

Have you tried googleing for border collie rescues? I just did it and loads came up, if I knew what area you were in I would have posted the closest ones. If you are in the UK, check out www.giveusahome.co.uk there are lots of rescue workers who use the site. Go to the chat pages and post a request for help under dogs and puppies.

In answer to your question, and if in the UK, many healthy greyhounds are put down every year due to being unable to race so it is not illegal in the UK but many vets may not like to do it.

Hope this helps and please try to find her a home, e-mail me if you think I can help with Internet searches and finding re-homing websites.

Some vets will do this if a dog is dangerous but you really need to take it to a shelter and tell them that you cant train her and that you can no longer take care of her. They will try to work with her and if they cant they will euthanized her. At least give her one more chance to change her ways. You really can teach an old dog new tricks given enough patience, education and time.

There are vets that will do it. What do you mean by difficult? If it is just training issues and she is a friendly dog shame on you!!! You want to kill her to make your life easier?

The only reason to put down a dog is untreatable health problems or if the dog is extremely agressive. No one can own a dog that attacks and bites at any chance. This is why so many pitbulls once used for fighted are euthanized

Yes, it's legal.
Sorry about your doggy.
My mother did the same thing, only she didn't try to rehome him. She just didn't want anyone else to have him. (They were moving and she didn't like to always have to take him when there was a showing on the house - it was too inconvenient for her, so she had him euthaized at 6 years old. He was a Rottie)

Done all the time. Two of my first rescues were from a vet that didn't want to put the two weimerainers to sleep.

If rescues have "rejected" her maybe that is what is needed. Is she a biter?

You can certainly ask. The worst the vet could do is refuse.

I know that some people have gotten dogs euthanised for snapping at children, etc. due to dangerousness.

[Before the Thumbs Down crowd starts...she is asking a proper question and I am answering within the terms of service. Move on.]

Dont give up. If u cant take care of her, and no body will buy her keep trying. If u really cant take care of her try taking her to a trainer. they can probaly train her to b less "difficult" I really wouldnt suggest putting her to sleep. If she is a healthy happy dog i think that would be cruel. If u keep trying te right person will come along to buy her. Good luck!

You can drop her off at an animal adoption facility or the local pound. If she is not adopted in a reasonable time, they will put her down. In the plus column, at least you will have tried one last chance to get her a home.
