i'm so tired of walking up late and getting nothing done -realizing pretty earlier on that waking up early is tied to a lot more productivity. but the problem is, i'm never motivated to get up and -always- feel like sleeping in. how can i force my 'internal clock' so to speak, get used to being an early riser?

First, go to bed the same time every night, 7 days per week. For me it's 9:00. Have a nice snack and drink every night, right before bed. This way when you get up you'll have to pee, making it harder to fall back asleep. Read in bed for at least 30 minutes before you want to go to sleep. No TV for at least 1 hour before bed (sleep doctors recommend longer like 2 or 3 hours).

To start, get a small crockpot and find an overnight breakfast recipe that appeals to you. If you don't get up on time, your food will burn and you'll have a bigger mess to clean up! Set your coffee pot to start 15-20 before you want to get up. If you don't have a coffee pot, buy a cheap, programmable one. If you don't like coffee, I don't know what to tell you with that! LOL

Set lots of alarms, and put them in places where you have to get up, not next to your bed. Set at least 2 or 3 alarms, but at a few minutes apart. You can also get cheap timers for your lights (like sprinkler timers) and set that to turn on early.

Pick out your clothes the night before. Take a shower in the morning. Have a glass of orange juice before your shower, and coffee and breakfast after. Make sure your place is clean (that helps a lot). If you can't fall asleep on time (with doctors permission) try Melatonin. It's a natural sleep supplement, and I use it for my 6 year old daughter. Ask a friend (who's a morning person) to blow up your phone.

I don't do all of this. But if I don't get at least half of my day finished by 9:00am, I am so off for the rest of the day. When I've had a bad weekend, I'll make apple oatmeal in the crockpot and set an alarm in my son's room. He would never let me go back to sleep.

Going to bed early and at the same time every night will transform you into an "early riser"!! I find leaving the curtains open so the morning light comes in the bedroom helps a lot also.

What helped me was forcing myself to get to bed early. I would wake up much more refreshed and ready to start the day. Also, I get to work as early as possible, so I can leave early as well. I like getting to work early because I'm the only one here for a couple of hours and I can relax and get my stuff done before everyone else arrives.

Be sure you go to sleep at the same time every night and get at least 8 hours of sleep. Also, taking a multi-vitamin should help you get moving.

Don't do it.

I've asked every cardiac patient I've tested for 26 years if they're early birds, and at least 9 out of 10 say they are and that they sleep badly and always have.

Sleep in, get your rest, keep your stress levels low.
