Hi, I'm Muslim and I was thinking after I finished my comm. engineering diploma I could take it to the military and serve in the RA-Sigs of Australia.
From a muslim perspective, does anyone know or think this is forbidden or otherwise? If so, why?
Thanks.

TruthSeeker - ofcourse I'm asking it because it's an issue... why else would I?
Anyone else got an answer for me, instead of telling me why im actually asking it?
Oh also I'm asking because it's said time and time again that a muslim must not bear arms against eachother or even point weapons at eachother, no matter the ideological differences. I was just wondering if there were any exceptions and stuff like that.

Novan,
I don't see where it would be an issue serving in the military if you pass all the background checks and such.
As far as being a Muslim.... you shouldn't point a weapon at another Muslim...but do you think that will stop them from pointing a weapon at you? The person who said God commanded thou shalt not kill...doesn't that apply to the other guy who is getting ready to kill you? Is he checking to see if you are a Muslim prior to taking the shot?
As I stated above.... if you want to join and can pass the background checks...do it. But you will have to do it without reservations. By that I mean.... you will have to be willing to return fire against anyone who is attempting to shoot you or your team....without stopping to determine if they are also Muslim.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

I can't speak for the Australian forces. But, there are over 3,000 Muslims in the U.S. Armed Forces and six Imams hold commissions as officers of the Chaplain Corps as well. When U.S. Marines landed at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, the Marine Corporal who raised the U.S. flag on the flag post was an Afghan-American and a Muslim. An Air Force Captain rushed back into the burning Pentagon on September 11, 2001 and led hundreds to safety while being badly burned in the process. He's a Muslim.
So, it appears that serving is not a "Haaram" (offense against the Koran).

If you want to serve in the Australian Army, that must be your decision and your decisiona lone. You must take into consideration if your choice will go against the 5 pillars of Islam:
1) Shahadah - Affirm that there is no God, but Allah and his messenger is Mohammed.
2)Salah - Pray 5 times a day facing the Holy city of Mecca.
3)Zakah - Charity to the poor.
4)Sawm - Fasting during the holy month of Rammadan.
5)Hajj - The Pilgrimage to the Kaaba in the Holy City of Mecca.
If you can do this while serving, then you are in the clear.
young_man504; if Muslims cannot, by religious authority, kill other muslims; then why are insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan killing scores of unarmed civilians in markets, schools and of all place, blowing up the Holy Mosque in Samarra?

but if these muslims are just muslims by name, but then go out and shoot their brethren (like the taliban do) then they're not really your brothers in religion are they ? you will not have to shoot the good guys, only the ones that want to kill and control their fellow countrymen. i know muslims and none of them shoot kids just because they have a U.S dollar on them, but this is exactly what the taliban folks do. so yea you wont fight muslims BECAUSE they're muslims you'll fight PEOPLE beacuse they're bad and they want to hurt other people. hope that helped.

Well, I can't give you a muslim perspective since I'm not muslim but IMHO you have to decide which you love more...your country or your religion.

If America is your country and you love your country.. it shouldn't matter who you would have to take up arms against. the enemy of my country is my enemy. i hope you decide to join up, because it is a good life style. sounds to me like you would be officer material as well. good luck and hope you make the right choice for you.
