I want to sponsor a family or a child from ethiopia - my question is - they 'give' you a child, or family, but does your family get the money (or the direct benefits of the money) I send, or does my money go to the community and get dished out amongst everyone in the town?

From my past experience (I am currently sponsoring 2 children) the money actually goes into a community pot that will benefit the children who are enrolled in the program. Your child will not have the money given to them directly (with larger organizations) but will benefit from some of the programs that your money helps to fund.

I have come across a new program lately called Rising Fountains Development Program. It's not Ethiopia but in Zambia which is still considered "Rural Africa". The man who runs it is named Mathias Zimba and is very reputable and good hearted. You can visit www.risingfountains.org and view the sponsored children that he has posted. I am convinced that a smaller organization like this would accept gifts for the child directly (others dont) I was so touched by his organization that I have partenered with him and send parcels to the children there twice a month. I have started an organization called The Pencil Project (www.thepencilproject.com) The children on my homepage are from his school.

Best of luck!

The money goes to the community but in such a way that those children who are sponsored benefit directly.

For example, your funds are pooled with the funds of other sponsors to ensure that all sponsored children have vaccinations, school uniforms and supplies. The pooled funds also pay the administrative costs of a local staff to organize activities for the kids or to teach the parents of the children skills to help with income generation, sanitation, etc.

If you send your sposored child a gift over the cost of monthly sponsorship - for example cash on his or her birthday - that money goes directly to his or her family. Generally, it is divided into something especially for the child (like a new outfit), food or seeds for the family to grow food, and the remainder is put on account for later expenses.
