We are all constantly going through a state of cellular birth and death - this happens all the time whether we are adults of children. It is a myth to think that because we are resting that the body will grow more.

For all animals. growth is more attuned to the seasons - we tend to grow faster during the spring / summer than during the autumn (fall) / winter primarily due to the abundance of food

In humans, I think sleep and darkness have little to do with growth.
