Do you still sit up front in an Australian taxi?

In Australia, is it still the case that you should sit up front in a taxi. When I was in Sydney ten years ago, the old habit seemed to be changing. With many more Asian taxi drivers around the old idea of riding up front next to the driver seemed to be less important. Has this trend continued? And what happens in rural Australia?

I never sit in the front seat. I don't trust them, Taxi Drivers can be perverted.

If I am the only passenger, I often do sit in the front seat, unless the driver has one of those horrible little 'security capsules', because they make the space too small.

If I am with other people I don't usually sit in the front.

In rural Australia it's just the same, I think.

I'm not sure if the habit is dying ~ some drivers don't like people sitting up front because of security issues, perhaps that has led to changes.

A friend from Germany was amazed with this 'habit' many years ago, and I was amazed to hear that in Germany it's not common to sit in front with the driver.

Yet, when I travelled last year from the airport in Berlin to my friend's house, the taxi that stopped at the airport was driven by an Australian! And yes, I sat right up front and had a good old chinwag :-)

I always sit in the front, and chat with the taxi driver unless i'm hungover or not in the mood to chat.
Thats the best part of catching a taxi, you can have a chinwag with someone whos often quite mad but usually hilarious.

it is still up to you. if you would like to chat with the driver, sitting in the front may be more convenient, i found personally.

i am an asian living in australia... everytime i take a cab, im always in the front. i dont know what aussies generally think about this but asian mindset has that if you are sitting at the back - you are making it clear that the driver is your servant.
when i am back in my country though, i sit at the back. no particular reason, its just natural response.

It's a great old egalitarian tradition, but as a female I always prefer to sit in the back, although the drivers pressure me to sit in the front. There are just too many drivers who ask intrusive questions of females and/or proposition them (even at my age!) The egalitarian thing is cancelled out by the gender difference, unfortunately.

However I have a lot of sympathy for cabbies as my ex-husband [technically we're only separated] used to be a cabby, and it's a very hard way to make a living.

It depends...I sit up the front however if im with a bunch of peoples i sit at the back...there are alot of asian drivers but they are really nice...tho i would not really recommend any girl to sit alone and try and chat to a driver regardless of their race as sometimes they can be creepy...kno from experience

Depends, I'm usually happy to sit in the front unless Im in a bad or un-talkative mood, then I'll sit in the back.
Also, If its late at night and Im by myself I'll usually sit in the back, just in case. The race of the driver makes no difference to my decision. Creeps come in all shapes and sizes.
