Scientists don't seem to "get" god yet they're the ones doing all the looking. Violent criminals seem to have a much easier time. Why? Do criminals have a clearer way of seeing things than those trained and practised at observation?

Because scientists are, for the most part, logical human beings; whereas serial killers are just things that want to avoid the death penalty. A lot of people find God in prison.
Two reasons I think. One is because being a believer makes the system treat you better. The other is because religion is one of the few social outlets in a prison.

Automatic guns are already banned. They want to put semi autos in the same category as automatics and most guns are semi auto. Yes gun crime is not as high in the UK but their violent crime rate (rape burglary home invasions...) is 3x higher than the US. They even have talks about banning long knives with a sharp point. The UK is also an island so its somewhat easier to keep out banned items. If the US banned the 2nd, there would still be guns coming in from Central America, the drug cartels would get a new source of revenue.

This is going to sound horribly judgemental, just to warn you. But please allow me to explain.
The difference is...pride. I'm not saying this to be mean. Scientists are VERY intelligent people, but they tend to get hung up on their own knowledge, and also on the physical. Many scientists seem to have trouble compartmentalizing; they try to put the same standards on emotional/supernatural things as they do on the concrete world. This just doesn't work. And many scientists also start thinking they don't need God, because there's "no such thing as sin" or because "there's no room for God in science."
On the other hand, a criminal is more likely to understand the NEED for God.
But to really put it in perspective, we are ALL criminals. Maybe we haven't killed people, or ever raped anyone, or molested a child, or anything like that...but everyone has lied, stolen, disobeyed their parents, coveted, been guilty of pride, have had lust in their heart/mind, and/or been greedy. Not all of us will admit it though. Hence, pride.
Criminals who realize they're guilty are more likely to admit a need for God.

As you sure know, thinking and feeling are two separate things. What science does is through thinking and there is no space for feeling there and as you surely know thinking and doing things through thinking, using your brain is hard. Usually people who understand things live a harder life than others. But killers do not think. They do lots of things through feelings like anger, hostility and etc. I am sure it is easier and life is easier for them, because they do not understand thing like scientists.

Because pride and arrogance are God blockers. Oh and by the way, there are MANY scientists who have come to know Christ, and yes, even believe in creation. I would give references but I really don't think you would check into them anyway.

When things are going well for people, we tend to be lacks concerning the things of God, including wanting God Himself.
But when we are at the end of our rope, and we are out of options, than we are open to receiving help from God.
That is why in the past, the Church has grown stronger during persecution, but (like now) when people are in prosperity we tend to be lacks with our relation with God and will do our own things.

Oh, thank you! I needed a laugh. I think these guys in prison who convert are just hoping to convince people that they shouldn't be fried in the chair because they've turned a new leaf...

I think the idea of God appeals to people who feel they have to either rationalise their warped morality, or appeal to a higher morality because they are incapable of making up their own. Scientists usually do not fit into either of these categories, neither do other highly educated people. People with mental problems and chronic weakness however, do. Hence lots of weak and messed up people are religious.
