I had this problem with my daughter and from my research, it is normal. However, the way we broke her from it was to take the diapers away completely. She knew when she had to go, she'd ask for a diaper to go....we just stopped buying them so we were honest when we told her "we don't have anymore diapers" (that whole 'only babies use diapers' thing didn't work on her). It was tough at first but one day she suddenly sprinted into the bathroom and had a BM. For the over night issue, I don't have a clue except to take the overnight diaper away too.

Put the training potty in a room that he feels comfortable in. Like the family room or his bedroom. That way he will feel more relaxed and at ease to have a BM.

put his butt on the potty and make him sit there. rub his belly it will help him start to go. or buy a potty chair that sits on the floor. some kids feel safer if their feet are on the floor, dont put his bedtime diaper on until he goes. this is a power struggle and a control issue. break this now

I agree with the first person: take the nappies (is that the correct plural of "nappy"? Sorry, I'm an American) away!
