After moving house this weekend I plugged my tv into the extermal ariel socket. to fint the tv saying no signal.
How can I test the ariel to see that it is the ariel that does not work and is not the tv that got damaged.

Quick test for the TV...stick a thin wire into the hole for RF coax....then raise it up high, not on the floor, or buy a tabletop antenna....
As for the aerial, you actually have to jumper one end of the coax to test for broken wiring....But in most cases it's something on the END of the cable causing your problems...
Bad wall plate, bad Balun at the antenna mast....Rusted /broken connection on the aerial....

I would advise you test the TV first by using an indoor aerial (Preferably an amplified one)
If you still get no signal, then the TV will probably need to be seen by a qualified engineer/technician
In regards to the Aerial, if you are confident the TV is in working condition, then reconnect the aerial to the TV and retune, but this time, check the aerial for rust, splits in the wiring and the coaxial head. Sometimes changing the coaxial head on the wiring can help and sometimes just be reprositioning the aerial. But if it looks slightly battered and bruised or looks ancient (rusty) then probably needs to be replaced

Forget messing around with Freeview,looks like you live in an area that has problems with it,simply get FreeSky no monthly payments and loads more stations about six movie channels instead of one but best of all no blocking freezing and making chirping noises,downside is that Virgin and Dave are not free,As I had your problem and seeing how next door paid £250 to have a new aerial and they still have problems.I got FreeSky cost me £120 for everything including fitting a year ago. Either try your tv in a aerial known to work, OR try a tv known to work in your suspect aerial socket.

Funny that.....I am not surprised if you insist on using soap powder instead of a proper aerial! Have you tried the aerial on another tv?

Get one person on the roof moving the ariel until you get a signal and you stay in when you get a signal scream, "I GOT IT" and if don't get a signal at all that means you need to call the repair man, well good luck!
