When the USA flew overhead, EVERYBODY DUCKED"

This was a quote from a British general during World War II. How little things change over 62 years. EVEN DICK CHENEYS HUNTING PARTNERS HAVE TO DUCK !!!.

Okay, that's fair. But there are also 2 quotes that could be added to this:
The first was taken from a Russian document sometime during the Cold War and says: "One of the serious problems in planning against American Doctrine is that the Americans do not read their manuals nor do they feel any obligations to follow their doctrine".
The second is a quote from a German Officer: "The reason that the American Army does so well in wartime is that war is chaos, and the American Army practices chaos on a daily basis".

Don't mess with us and you don't have to worry about ducking.

In some ways it's a pity that the US has never had to face direct hostile acts on its own territory (in the context of mass casualties 9/11 is a pinprick). To have been on the receiving end at home as the British and Germans were makes one realise that the sort of campaigns waged in Hollywood or by proxy on CNN are nothing like the real thing. This whole gung-ho, shoot-em-up ethic we see espoused in some of these answers makes you wonder whether some of our transatlantic allies have any real conception of what warfare, especially aerial bombardment, is really like.

Having said that - hand on heart, would you rather be on the US side or the enemy's?

Yes. As high as they want to. But domesticated ducks (ones that live in lakes and are fed by humans) tend not to go very high. It's not at all unlikely for ducks to fly seven blocks to your pool. There's probably a shortage of food in their park or they were getting in fights with other ducks, or they want to nest around your home.

This saying still holds good today - witness events in Iraq/Afganistan. As regards Rayn-is remarks about the Brits trailing behind the Americans after D day, the history books tell that the Americans were so keen to grab the glory of liberating Paris that they went galloping off in front, with no regard for anyone else, and if it hadn't been for the Brits and Canadians watching their backs, the German army would have closed in behind them and kicked their backsides good and proper
