doctors only know what they can prescribe for what they see as syptoms, but they can't see what is going on in the human mind.

Effexor is a very good treatment for Depression and anxiety disorders, one of the best available. Yes it kind of does drug you up and make you forget your problems, but combine it with counselling and advice from a doctor and it will work very well.

Actually many mental illnesses are caused by chemical imbalances, which can be cured with medicine. Some disorders can be treated with therapy, and some with a combination of the two.
Yes, medication is overprescribed, but for those who genuinely need it, it's a lifesaver.
And I'm really hoping you don't think yourself to be a psychology expert. Are you, what, in seventh grade?

**edit, yes I'm saying legal drugs are okay. I'm not saying that people should treat schitzophrenia with crack.
Mental illnesses are treated the same as physical illnesses, because they ARE caused by disorders within the body. Do you think cancer patients should be told "Oh you just need to sort it out" or diabetics should say "Get over it, eat sugar. Deal!"

I have taken medicines that have really helped me!

Sometimes it's just pain relief, so you might say I didn't really strictly need it. Sometimes it's only relief of symptoms (like decongestants for a cold or antihistamines for allergies) but they really are a help!

I am diabetic and take a pill twice a day that really helps me keep my blood sugar in control. Without these drugs diabetics would have many more complications, as can be seen from statistics today and 30 years ago.

Also consider that 100 years ago between 1/3 and 1/4 of children died befor age 10 of childhood diseases. Today they are rare, because of vaccines.

To the first guy who answered re. Effexor - I can seriously find you 1000's people on that aweful drug who would contridict you. Its extremely addictive, bad side-effects and not suitable for anxiety disorders (i say this from experience).

I find that doctors give out meds to freely and will give them without you first consulting a therapist.

Shouldnt you be assessed, diagnosed then given meds (if absolutely necessary), not the other way around?!

I take it that you are neither educated nor do you have any actual experience with mental illness. For one thing, these 'problems' that 'just need sorting', often they are neurological/chemical imbalances. To, er, 'sort' them, you would require... medicine?

Medicine, for the record, does not destroy the body. They have a whole section of the government designed to make sure of that very thing.

Whereas 'drugs', street drugs, well those DO destroy your body because any jack@ss can cook n cut in their grandma's basement.

Masking or displacing an observers diagnosis creates a path toward reconciliation.Medication will rarely cause change unless accepted by the patient.Permanent damage is merely cause for additional diagnosis.

Consider, if you would, a person who has been severely abused, mentally, physically, sexually........for years lived in fear of being killed by a member of their own family .....extreme traumas one after another.

The result of such abuse is PTSD and a misshapen brain that no longer functions as it did when this person was born. As a result of the brain malfunction this person is in a permanent physical/mental state of depression. This person is left with an inability to function normally enough to care for himself, children, or to work and support the family.

Now, this person has a desire, and that desire is posed to the psychiatrist: "I know I'll never be normal, but I just want to be able to function as close to normal as I am able"

The psychiatrist (brain Dr.) has compassion on the person in his office. He seeks to set forth a recommendation for therapy with a psychologist, and addresses the current symptoms with a minimum of medication for the person, to settle down the symptoms enough so the person can do the work prescribed therapy . This person's depression is getting in the way of being able to reason and make decisions. So, too, the depression is also addressed to replace what the brain no longer can manufacture on its own.

No, even years later, after therapy this person has come a long way towards normal functioning, but still is fully aware he is NOT functioning in a fully NORMAL way.
The medication assists him to come as close as possible toward normal. But the norm he sees all around him will never quite be within his grasp.

And yet -- within this true story -- this person with so many problems finds a depth of gratitude for the privilege of having antidepressants and anti psychotics available, Because life just would not be something this person could participate in.without the help.

To the questioner: WOULD YOU DENY the minimal assistance of medication to a person who is so lacking???
I'm not sure just which medication you are referring to, or which Dr. insists on medication in the place of therapy.
Over all, from your comments, it appears you have been misinformed.

P.S. TO YOUR COMMENT "THEY CAN ONLY SEE SYMPTOMS" "CAN'T SEE ....(SORRY, I FORGET THE WORD USED) ..."........BRAIN FUNCTION . I DISAGREE. I HAD NUMEROUS TESTINGS DONE, INCLUDING MRI WHERE THEY LOOK AT THE INSIDE SLICES OF THE BRAIN ITSELF -- AS WELL AS A FULL GAMUT OF PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING, PROVING WHAT DOES AND DOES NOT WORK WITHIN MY BRAIN --- ALL FOLLOWING EXTREME TRAUMAS EXPERIENCED.
-- MY PAST- LIFE EXPERIENCES HAVE CAUSED PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES. THOSE CHANGES TRANSFER TO MY ABILITY TO FUNCTION. THAT ABILITY / DISABILITY TO FUNCTION IS CALLED A DISORDER. THERAPY HELPED ME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I HAD LOST AND HOW TO COMPENSATE TO A CERTAIN EXTENT, AND HOW TO MOVE PAST THE TRAUMA EXPERIENCED, BUT ONLY WITH THE ADDITION OF MEDICATION WAS I ABLE TO REGAIN THE ABILITY TO FUNCTION IN SOCIETY.
I CAN UNDERSTAND YOU DO NOT WISH YOUR FRIEND TO BE LABELED WITH A "DISORDER", HOWEVER, THE DISORDERS ARE MERE CATEGORIES OF GROUPS OF SYMPTOMS. THE LABEL HELPS THE DR / THERAPIST TO BE ABLE TO FOLLOW ALREADY ESTABLISHED TREATMENTS THAT WILL BE EFFECTIVE FOR THAT SET OF SYMPTOMS WITHIN YOUR FRIEND.
