You are almost an adult and by 18 you will be able to do as you please. Part of becoming an adult is making ur own decisions and if you really want to join a mission then thats whay you should do.
Personally I dont believe in this talking in tongues stuff, I think it's mass hysteria, but if you do then maybe you should go ahead and honor your mother and do what she wants.

good morning! Speaking in tongues is a gift, but not everyone receives every gift. There are some great places for you to start in missions field. Sometimes parents have a hard time letting go, but I would definitely pray and seek God on this decision. The easiest way to hear an answer from God is to fast. It can be a 1 day or last however long you want it to. It can be from all food or just your favorite. This will bring you closer to God and help you understand His will for you. In my personal opinion, I think a mission trip would be fantastic for you. I have posted links to two groups I would suggest you look into. My mom and I had a difficult time when I left too! I flew across the country just to live my life, what you are doing is fantastic! Years later she told me how proud she was of my decision and she was able to see that it was the best for me. Keep your head up and keep close to God. You are doing great. Just remember to respectfully disagree while letting her know you still love her and appreciate her. God bless!

Gosh, I hope I don't end up repeating a lot of people here. First off, as others have said, there are MANY spiritual gifts, not given in a similar fashion, and not "equally" distributed. You could have 7, your mom could have 2. Or vice versa. Whatever. You may have legal issues as well -- I've never gone on a mission trip (sad), so I don't know all that entails, but I would assume that a parent or guardian would have to sign for you, as in many states (if not all), just because you are free may not mean that you are legally able to enter into some types of agreements (understand that I do not know your exact specifics here). At the end, after prayer (of course), if it comes down to obeying your mom's wishes or doing what the Holy Spirit has called you to do -- well, there's your answer.
Have a great day! My prayers are with you!

You're NOT free if you don't know answer.
KNOW shall make YOU free: John 8:32.
Ye(do err)... becomes You(do not err).
There's no option. There is chanGe.
As for your mommy, she's a dangerous help.
Holy Ghost = plural tongues: carnal.
Holy Spirit = tamed tongue: James.
Pst: God [is] a Spirit, not a Ghost.
God is merciful, not merciless.
Mommy has worry: is like a magnet that attracts tribulation.
Mommy has fear: hath torment. Perfect love hath no fear.
As for honour: honour your parents "in the Lord".
There is always 'clarity' of everything that's said.
You? Get the beam(law) out of your own eye FIRST,
so you can SEE better how to help others with splinters.
The kingdom of heaven is like unto LEAVEN: Mt 13:33.
So, seek ye FIRST the kingdom of God and his grace.
Unless you want saved to be saved + destroyed after.
Pst: the kingdom of God is within YOU, and not within ye.
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

Well hon, you are right in wanting to honor your mother. However, you are 17 and almost old enough to vote. You will soon be on your own. This will be a matter between you and God. You are to be accountable to him and the call he places on your life. Since your Mom has received the HS with the evidence of speaking in tongues, you need to make yourself available to be prayed over in the church by anointed ministers who can give you a Word or Prophecy from the leading of the HS. If you seek God's counsel, he'll instruct you in what he desires from you. It could even come thru a dream. But you will get an answer from him if you seek him and wait for it to come. To be assured that you are on the right track, you should have about 3 witnesses or confirmations, all in agreement.

I assume you're Christian. If that's the case, you should pray about it. I don't think that anyone would be able to give you the "right" answer in this case.
Personally, I'd go anyway, simply because I don't believe that "speaking in tongues" is a sign of "having the Holy Spirit." I also think maybe you're being urged to go BY the Holy Spirit.
If it's God that has put the desire in your heart, GO.

Although your mothers thoughts about the holly spirit is wrong because the holly spirit is in all the Christians the true Christians. And his works are varied some will speak in tongues some will prophesy some heal people and it goes on. What happens if you don't have the gift of tongues your mother want allow you to go anywhere on your life.
But the bible clearly states to obey your parents and to honer your mother to live a long life in the commandments.
Although I'm 18 my parents don't place conditions to me. but i clearly know they pray to god to change my heart when i take some wrong decisions. So you do the same only that you are going to pray to god to change your mothers decision.
but don't disobey your parents... please...
the bible says prayer can move mountains so trust in god and leave it to his hands.
and remember jesus obeyed his parents when they told him to come with them to home form the temple in Jerusalam.
I sincerely hope you will be involved in the work of our god.

Hi Casey,
I think it shows great maturity that you are so young and concerned with whether or not you would be dishonoring your mother. If God has called you to go on this missions trip, then you would be honoring your Lord by obeying Him. I can't think of any reasons why this should dishonor your mother. Since you no longer live in her household, you are no longer under her rules. It's good that you're considering her feelings on this issue, but ultimately, as a young adult living on your own, it's entirely your decision to make.
For such an important decison, I would earnestly seek God's answer for you in prayer. If He's calling you to go, He'll let you know. In situations where we know God is calling us to do something but our loved ones don't want us to (usually because of fear), the Bible tells us we should obey God rather than men (Acts 4:19, Acts 5:29).
Depending on where you'd be going, your mom may be reacting out of fear, especially if the missions trip is overseas. Her reaction is only natural because, in her eyes, you'll always be her little girl and she'll always want to protect you. If God confirms that you should go, I would very lovingly and respectfully explain to her that you're being called to go and that you have to obey that calling. Tell her you understand her worry and concern. Thank her for being a good mom, protecting you, raising you with moral values, and guiding you in making good choices in life. Then explain to her that since you have become a young woman, she has to let go and trust God with you now - she has to trust Him to guide you in your decisions, to direct your paths in life, and to care for and protect you.
Also, this may not be the time to get into a deep discussion with your mom about speaking in tongues. Or it could be. Just follow the Holy Spirit's leading. But, just because you can't speak in tongues does not mean that you don't have the Holy Spirit. I believe that idea is in direct contradiction to scripture. See 1 Corinthians 12-13: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians%2012-13;&version=31;
Verse 4 tells us, "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit." God created each one of us uniquely. We are not all the same, and we do not all have the same gifts. Verses 7-10 lists the manifestations of the Spirit, which are: Wisdom, Knowledge, FAITH, Gifts of Healing, Miraculous Powers, Prophecy, Discernment, Speaking in different kinds of tongeus, and Interpretation of tongues. Verse 11 tells us that God gives to each one as HE determines - not as someone else determines.
All of us might not share all of these manifestations, but we do each have one in common - our FAITH in Christ Jesus our Lord. We each received the Holy Spirit the moment we believed and put our faith in Christ:
"And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. HAVING BELIEVED, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory." -Ephesians 1:13-14
I pray that God would guide you in your decision and that He would calm your mom's fears and concerns. I've been on missions trips before, and I can tell you that they are life changing experiences. You'll never be the same again. It's awesome to see God at work in the world - to see Him changing hearts, restoring broken lives, and giving hope to the hopeless through His Son, Jesus. And, what's even more amazing is that, in His goodness, He uses us and allows us to be a part of it!
God bless!

Not everyone who has the Holy Spirit talks in tongues.
1 Corinthians 12; (also read chapter 14)
7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
But maybe you should at least wait until you are 18(or21), but do as God says.
