The German armed forces are more formidable than you might imagine,,,their navy is pretty much restricted to coastal defence and patrol although they do have a reasonably sized fleet of frigates and destroyers, not more than 10 ships,,the air force is comparable to the UK Royal Air force,,,they have a lot of fighters,,a throwback to the cold war,,as for the army,,they have more AFVs ( armoured fighting vehicles) than the UK,,In the 1980s the UK tank regiments could only field about 900 main battle tanks ,,the German army could field nearer 1,500....the army is as well equipped as the UK and in some instances better,,they have a very large support section and could easily hold their own against the UK
Apart from the 1945 - 1955 era the German armed forces have been larger then those of the UK,,,

Potentially Germany could have a massive army and considerable military might. Germany no longer has conscription which means that young men from age 18 no longer have to do military service. This means in effect that the Germany Army is an entirely professional army and is kept at modest proportions.
The following link will help explain about the Germany Army and military of today : -

More often than not with today's media, you have to pay more attention to what ISN'T said than what is. Today's German military numbers around 1,250,000(about same number as in 1914). The German military is a well trained and well equipped with the military's standard rifle the Heckler and Koch G36 which far exceeds the American AR-15 design. They rival the US military with there research and have already developed motorized artillery and nuclear submarines that exceed what is in the US military. Although the German Army is currently operating with NATO forces in Afghanistan, resentment is growing amongst the ranks and moral is steadily dropping. It is important to note that today's German military is completely different than the German military of WW2 and so will stay away from anything that links it to Nazism. I don't think it is the Germans we need to be worried about anyway, perhaps the real threat is with the number one military in the world, China, numbering in the hundreds of millions, and with a population close to 2 billion, a war of attrition would prove devastating.

The Germans are NOT in Iraq, they are in Afghanistan.
The German Navy is in service as part of U.N.I.F.I.L. off the coast of Lebanon.
The German Forces are strong enough to do their job, which was in the Cold War period to take on a Russian and Associated Communist Forces moving west.
Since the end of the Cold War the German military has been reduced but they still take conscripts in for military training.

I was stationed in Germany 1998-2000. Their grunts were as hard-core as our, and their signal corps guys have as modern equipment as us, if not better. I'm not sure on their numbers, but their quality is top notch.

they sell their surplus armor to Canadians to use it in Afghanistan. that's how they are strong.
Their armed forces lack uptodate infantry fighting vehicle, they are designing a new one called Puma, up to day the have only relative obsolete Marder tracked IFVs.
They are strong and they were strong, since they were the first line of defense against Warsaw pact units.
