Depends. If the can comes out a fridge pack or cardboard box you should not have to since they have been concealed since bottled.

I don't think there is a standard answer as to how clean they are. It just depends on how the cans were handled when they were shipped and then placed on the store shelf- did another customer with dirty hands touch the can before you? Was something spilled on them by a clerk? Who knows! If you are worried, just wipe them down, or pour the soda into a glass.

i in my opinion won't drink out of a soda can. it relatively is a quirk I certainly have. I wipe off the right, pop it and pour it right into a tumbler of ice. If i've got not got a tumbler of ice attainable......i've got not got a soda.

Washing the top of soda /pop can is a good hygienic habit.
The pop can is probably clean, but one never knows! So do what you must for your health and peace of mind.

as much as factories try to keep things clean and sanitary i have worked in them for over 30 years so trust me when i say wash them off good girl. there have been alot of hands on them till they get out the door and the factories aren't that clean either most are very dusty at the very least and its hard telling who has touched them. i have worked in food service as well and i like the fact that i can see when employees at subway wash their hands and put on gloves right in front of me before my food is served up. way to go subway.wash it all off and fruits and veggies also.

YES. In actual fact, a while ago, there was a case of a woman opening her can of soft drink of whatever it was and she died from poisoning. A rat had run through the factory/warehouse and pissed on the cans and therefore poisoned them. Poor woman totally unsuspectingly just drank from the dodgy can.
Be careful!

Yes, no matter where you purchased it from or handling it from (i.e home refrigerator) germs/bacteria/other food may be found on the top. Also, anything you put in your mouth goes into your system even if the saliva does break down most of the substances, it's not 100% proof!

Well if you think of how many people have touched it before you and what they were doing with there unwashed hands then it makes you think twice about washing off the top of the can.

It's a good idea to wipe it off first.

yes, wipe it off. when the cans are in the warehouses dust and all sorts of stuff gets on them. of course your not going to die..[no one has yet] but for germ freaks, do it..=]]
also there have been instances of rats and/or mice found in the warehouses and their feces. but thankfuly not very often...Yech!
