Ok...this is weird. I have a 98 Nissan Maxima and it was raining last Friday. I put the defrost on and instead of clearing up the windshield, it started to make it worse and fog up the whole car.
When the defrost or now even the heater go on. The vents will actually start blowing steam out because of the cold, so now the car is like a sauna. It also smells like coolant. Anyone got any ideas??? I guess I will need to take it to the car shop, but I'm curious to find out what happened.

Get ready for a good wallet clean out! Removing the entire dash board should be left to a Nissan Technician or some one with experence with Nissans. DO not cut and splice the heater hoses just remove the hoses carefully and using a prestone flushing T connect the two hoses that will give you a little time until ice forms on the inside of the glass, to locate a good mechanic. Coolant on the floors is a possability but worse is overheating the engine so stop the leak then keep antifreeze in the cooling system. Get The heater core inspected soon!

Your heater core is either going or gone. The reason why you're smelling the coolant is because you have a leak and it's either coming in contact with your heater core or it's dripping inside of your car. Check around the floor boards to see if it's wet. You should get your car into a licensed dealer or someone that's licensed to work on Nissan cars. This is going to cost you big time. However take it from someone who's been there be if you're a female have a male go with you because they will over charge you and charge you for things for stuff that's not even wrong with your car. They see you as a female and therefore it's automatically assumed you know nothing about a car. If you can't get a male to go with you have them check the car and call you with what's wrong and a price then call a male person that knows about cars and verify the information that was given to you with them. Just don't let them take you to the bank on this.

The smell of coolant has me concerned. The smell along with the steam on the windshield could be a sign of a leak in your cooling system or heater core. The steam is creating a film on the inside of the windshield. A temporary fix for the steaming up is to thoroughly clean the inside of the glass. I'd bring it in to a garage and get it looked at.

It's the heater core. quick fix for now cut the hoses going to it from under hood and hook them together you will not have heat but you won't have antifreeze all over the place either you should have a wet carpet under dash on passenger side as well if it's leaking that bad might not but you don't want to breath it ether
