he will get BAH based on your location during Basic training and school. he will not get BAS, as all his meals will be provided, and BAS is only to feed the servicemember.

You will get housing allowance, but it may not be as much as you think. Housing is determined by location (while he is in basic, it would be based on where you are living/his home of record) and rank. You can look it up on the internet, although his recruiter should be telling you this. The food allowance is for the military member specifically, not for his dependents. If he is stationed someplace where he will be on a meal card or getting rations, you generally loose that allowance. Trust me when I say do not plan on the BAS as "family" grocery money...if he is sent to a remote or long deployment, you will find yourself wondering where the $$ went and how to make up for it. Even when he is getting it, again it is not much..a little over $200 a month. If you are having questions about his pay, he needs to talk with his recruiter. He can tell you how much his base pay will be and what you should be getting for housing.

You get your pay, food allowance and housing allowance all mixed in one payment. So just how are they suppose to know if you saved it or spent it? You can do what you want with it. Buying a house is a good investment provided you stay at each base 3-4 years. If you move in just 2-3 years you will probably lose money each time you sell, paying off the real estate agent. Also, you can write the mortgage interest off your taxable income, even though the housing allowance is non-taxable. (Loophole they talk about fixing every now and then but nothing has ever come of it.) If you are married to another service person, then you definitely should buy a house.

Actually BAH is based on where he's at when in basic - so it could be more than where you are or less. BAS you will not receive until he's out of training mode as it's to cover the cost of his rations - you can't even count on getting it when he's in the field (some commanders take it some don't depends on the length of the training exercise).

As soon as he/she reports to BCT the soldier gets Base Pay, BAH based on Home of record. Now the BAS applies to the soldier due to the fact that they are in a training setting. All of this varies due to rank, time in service, etc. But when my husband was in BCT he got Base Pay, BAH, and BAS on top of FSA. So look on his LES to make sure that they are getting it all right.

If you both had descent jobs and some savings, you wouldn't have to depend on the chump change he'll be making. A descent recruiter should have run the numbers for you.
