The above answers seem to be reasonable.
Pick6's answer seems to be excellent if you are wondering about minimizing costs while getting excellent dental care from a very responsible organization, Dental School Center, SUNY, Stony Brook, where dental students immediately supervised by dental professors do the dental work with I believe the cost being for materials only and not labor and profit by having the high quality work done at an accredited dental school supervised directly by dental school professors.
I received very poor quality orthodontist work from a self employed dentist who had about 5 years of experience but had no one to complain to other than the dentist who did the below average work, so don't let a dental student closely supervised by a dental professor scare you or think that you will get inferior dental work.
I believe that you have to get on a waiting list which may be a matter of months.
It is your choice getting the work done done immediately for your 9 year old daughter and paying significantly more then going to a regaular orthodontist is the way to go , or, if you can be put on a waiting list for a number of months for your first appointment and paying significantly less, then an accredited dental school is the way to go.
If you have dental insurance for the family, then the insurance only pays for a small amount of the total cost of things like braces unlike medical insurance where a co-pay is made while medical insurance pays the majority of a large medical (non-dental) bills.
You probably know all of this.
A convenient accredited and large dental school is at Stony Brook with their website, address, and phone numbers:

You're welcome.

It is usually aroud 3000 dollars per arch at a private orthodontist. You can try NYU and Columbia dental schools for a better deal. The are postgraduate students, but are supervised by full time faculty. Sometimes you actually get a better result since everything is carefully planned out and not just about making money.

Braces are different for each person and each dentist has his/her own fees. There's not one price for braces. You'll have to shop around.
