My wife cleans her ears almost everyday with a q-tip, I think it's weird and unnecessary, I was told it's not good to clean your ears too much. how often is normal?

As long as she never puts into the actual canal, should be okay.

Sometimes people need a daily routine to ensure they remember. It's obviously important to her.

I have heard of others who never do and have to have a doc irrigate after too much clogging of old ear wax (affects hearing)

Besides, her wax production may be more frequent than your body's.

Well, the question 'how often is normal' isn't going to be the same for everyone. My ears need to be cleaned about once a week or they start looking really gross. Different people, different ears, different cleaning schedules.

Caution with the q-tips, however. Never put it farther into your ear than your finger can reach. And stand still while you're doing it - if you jam a q-tip into your eardrum, we're talking permanent damage and hearing loss. That'll really ruin your day.

I clean my ears everyday, too. If you are a "wax former," you need to keep after your ears and keep them clean. Some people produce more wax than others. A q-tip is fine as long as it is not poked too far into the ear canal. Just swirling it around the opening of the ear is usually sufficient to keep the ear clean.

yes, it's not good to clean our ears everyday because it wipes away the 'wax' that is supposed to protect our ears from external harmful elements. our ear drums are very sensitive and once broken, cannot be fixed. i have two close friends who do it too (cleaning ears very often) that both of them are now having serious hearing impairments. the ENT doctor said that it really caused their problems. i think once a week will be a good practice and we should observe that the cotton tip do not go too deep in our ears when doing so.

I clean mine everyday after my shower because when I was younger I got too much water in my ears and had to have tubes put in to drain it. Now I'm paranoid. The only reason it would be bad is if you shove the Q-tip too far into the ear canal.

I do that once a day after every shower.

Ironically the labeling warns not to enter the ear canal and just clean around it, but if I skip a few days and do it, the swab is covered in wax! Yuck! It builds up fast.

OMG I can't believe someone said EVERDAY....You shouldn't stick a q-tip in ur ear because that just pushes more wax into your ear. It can also mean that you might accidentally break your ear drum one day. Best way to clean ears is go to a doctor and get it done atleast once a yr (if ur rly into it). Or just put some mineral oil in your ears and stick cotton in them at nite. Next morning just take out the cotton and ta dah CLEAN!

my doctor told me to stop doing that
she said that my ears have a fluid inside that washes
the wax out when it needs to
and everytime i put a q-tip in I am only
pushing the wax more in
and that is bad and also the reason
why my ear was clogged :/
she said to only use a q-tip to clean the outside
do not insert it in
So i did and every now and then
my ear does exactly what she said it washes out
a small ball of wax
and everyday when i shower i wash the out side of my ear
so i don't need q-tips unless im doing art

I have to wear ears plugs at work every day and if I don't clean my ears after every shower than the plugs tend to get sticky with wax. Dirty ear plugs are not a cool thing!

she's just hygenic, no need to worry!

but tell her she can decrease cleaning her ears out with a q-tip if she goes to a local chinese pharmacy and get wax tubes, cylinder shaped tubes that you put in your ear, and light the other side mith a lighter and let it burn to almost the end while its in her ear, and when you take the tube out, you can cut the tube nd you see all this dried up ear wax on the wax inside the tube, gross but very cool!
