I'm an almost 30 year old mom of three kids. My husband and I are both into alternative lifestyles (goth, in particular), as well as I'm bisexual.

My parents live with us, and make it very difficult for me to have any outside friends, because they feel that my life should revolve around my kids. That I should have NO LIFE other than my children (despite the fact that when my mother first had her kids, she continued to sing and tour profesionally).

Due to my mental health issues, I need to have a support system, other than verbally abusive parents.

I'm looking for websites (since I CAN get on the computer) where I might be able to meet other people with similar interests to mine, possibly to meet up with OFFLINE. I need a life, I NEED FRIENDS!

Any suggestions?

Friendster.com is usually said to be pretty good.
Several "dating" websites out there offer the choice to just seek friends, with no romantic overtone at all.
Netfriendships.com is an option, but I don't know personally if it's any good.
You -can- go the myspace.com route...But beware, it's absolutely clogged with superficiality. It takes time to weed though all the people that you don't want.
Yahoo Groups can provide soliderity at least online through interests and such.
I wish you the very best of luck from the bottom of my heart - you deserve a group of loving friends to have outside of your family life.
Ever need to vent/rant/chat, drop me a line. :)

I think you need to first think for yourself and not listen to mom and dad. Just remember, you do have a responsibility to your children though.

I will be honest with you, this "alternative lifestyle" as you call it would scare the majority of folks out there. I strongly suggest you either keep that side of your life to yourself or at least get some counseling.

Doing something that involves your kids with others and their parents will help you meet others.

Friends in person are better than friends online. I like the advice about joining something relating to your childs school. Maybe motherhelp in the classroom?
What about joining a community group or take an evening course. It sounds like as long as your parents live with you, your life will be influenced by them. You need to work out your life goals and where you are headed then you can work on your life.

this is a good start. majoin a playgroup with your kids or if at school get involved with say tuckshop or other school activity. that way you meet new people and still have time for kids.
that way your mum cannot complain.

can mum and dad move out of your home - that would take some stress away.
