I will use the Army as an example. In the Army there are three basic branches, Active Army, National Guard, and U.S Army Reserves. Active Army are the full time soldiers, in the Reserve Component is the Guard and Reserves. Guard are basically the belong to the State they reside in and usually work one weekend a month with a two week Active Training period once a year. The Reserves have the same training requirements however they belong to the Federal Government. Does that help?

The Navy Reserves are made up of SELRES and IRR.
The Selected Reserve, or SELRES, is the Navy’s primary source of immediate mobilization manpower and represents those Reservists who are paid, either as weekend drillers or who serve as Full Time Support (FTS) on active duty status in the training and administration of the Navy Reserve Force program.
The Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) consists of those members of the Ready Reserve who are not in the Selected Reserve.
Depending on your Rate-your occupation that consits of your special skills and abilities, you might be activated to active duty or re-call to active duty(prior active duty). As an example an HM-Hospital Corpsman(they assit medical profesionals) their job vary such as pharmacits, medical technitians, nurse's aid, even as a battlefield medic.
So, lets say, you're an HM on Reserves and there looking for an HM as an Individual Augmentee and they really need a HM, you're very likely to go to what ever location they need you.

There are advantages with being in the reserves, you can get tuation assistance for college. A lot are under the impression that if you're a navy reservist you get full medical and dental benefits, that is a misconception. You can only get full benefits if you are activated to an active duty status.
There are programs that you can be eligible for medical and dental but will have to pay premimums. You're better off having your on medical insurance, in the end you'll save yourself a headache.
Hope this information was helpful.
