It's a Nikon Coolpix L3, it landed on its zoom (while it was open, i was uploading some pictures) it turns on to a plain white screen and stays that way for a few seconds, then it tries to go through the motion of turning on- the zoom goes out then pulls back in some, and thats where it gets stuck, and has a screen that says "objective error". Is the zoom just off its track and needs to be reset or was something else inside the camera screwed up to make the white screen come up?

The tapping isn't working.. The zoom won't move at all any more. It wasn't a terribly expensive camera, less than $150, and I don't really have a ton of time (going out of the country soon). Is it better probably to just get a new camera?

Try powering the camera On and OFF whille "gently" tapping in on a hard surface. If you're lucky the lens is off its track and will just pop back in. This worked for my kodak digital.

An out of warranty repair could be very expensive. :(

- I'm sorry the tapping did not work. Yes at this point a new purchase is your best option.

Gravity and water are the leading killers of cameras. "Tapping" it will only exacerbate the problem. Its a camera, not a hammer.

Your camera is now a paperweight. Repairs will be at your expense and will cost more than a new camera. You may now begin shopping for its replacement.
