not allow the federal government to mandate a state sanctioned religion? Akin to the one the founding fathers left back in England? In fact, correct me if Im wrong, wasnt it originally just a federal law and not a state issue at all?

This is the First Amendment:

First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

I have recently begun studying this. Im not proposing to know all the facts, nor am I making a hard and fast decision. I would like to know what others think of this; preferrably ones who are well versed or more versed than myself on this subject.

SIDENOTE: I am putting this in our section because we are the only ones that are really active at this time and I would like some discussion on it.

Earth, you have to admit their plan was brilliant. Owners of slaves or not, it is what it is. Our system is by no means perfect, but when you look at all the thought put into it; its pretty amazing.

As a decent human being I try to avoid politics.
Yet there is a need for a true separation between, church and state.
The true church lies within the heart of man.
The state of man is the 'state of ignorance' that he has allowed himself to bask in.
These two items need to be separated.
The church within man needs to be set free and the state of ignorance needs to be discarded so the church within the heart of man regains its original state of purity.

May man learn to separate these two aspects that both dwell within of the heart of man.

No it would not The tax exempt status is a authorities waiver which must be petitioned that signifies that each and every employer is in concept taxable, which does no longer deny the existence or operation of the employer in question, ergo the freedom to verify a company/faith is genuine and alive That the authorities makes a tax exemption and units rules, is that is govt prerogative, which does no longer violate the separation of church and state you won't be able to perceive this as a discrimination both. evaluate you've 10 ppl that are in debt with you (TAX) and also you position a level by technique of that you may also make your concepts as a lot as pardon the debt (tax exemption) in case you settle on to waiver 8 out of 10, it really is your organization, you aren't any more obliged to (i'm no longer going into the very undeniable truth that politics can/will effect the decision in awarding tax exempt status, yet it really isn't any longer on the middle of the "separation" question) Btw i do not stay contained in the US, in basic terms an ex regulation student Peace Edit I forgot to instruct that "the separation of state & church", is only a idea which could variety a great deal from state to state or usa to usa do not fool yourselves, both were large fans contained in the previous, and both attempt to rule your lives, the church would were "formally" banned from place of work, yet remains an important political social gathering. The info is, in all that the Atheists are bitching about the following on YA 24/7,that that they had sense free if all ties were severed Peace

To keep the United States of America from becoming another cesspool of religious persecutions that was apparent with the Roman Catholic Church for centuries on end. The Anglican church too caused many to flee their country, because It was the 'State Church' which demanded from it's citizens certain ideas on how to worship.

Our Founding Fathers saw to it that nothing like that would happen here. The government has rather recently saw to it that those things were ignored. And there are entities within the government that seeks to erode it further.

The 14th Amendment makes the Bill of rights apply to state laws as well.

But yes, the original intent of the 1st Amendment was to prohibit the federal government from regulating/legislating religion (the law is actually stronger than that, as it prohibits congress from even respecting the religious establishment).

I dont really know why you differentiate between state and federal in terms of this issue. Federal law trumps state laws and the Constitution points out what should be the federal gvts responsibililty and the rest is pretty much up to the diff states. Fed gvt has way overstepped its authority, imo, in many areas.

I think you nailed it. Founders wanted to protect both religious freedom and the states freedom from a specific religion dictating laws. They did not want to take the concept of God out of the lives of the citizens. That was never the intention. Their concept of individual rights stem from the notion that there are certain God given rights that you are born with. (if you were a white male of course, lol) They prayed before every meeting when drafting the US Constitution.

You will never take religion out of any type of democratic gvt. We vote according to our values and beliefs so our religious biases will always play a role in public life. We have freedom of speech so that gives a person a right to lobby for their point of view to be more accepted.

Fed gvt cannot proclaim a national religion. That was the point of that clause. That was really the only point. This one point allows freedom of all religions to exist and for the gvt to function without having to support one specific religion only.

Hi Lucid Freedom, With this amendment in you constitution has been used by many cult leaders to open culled religion in USA where the police can't protect children from being sexually and physically abused in these religious cults. By using it as there right to do this to children leaving the US police hands tied to do anything to help these children who become victims. The W.B.C freely use this amendment to protest at dead Soldiers funerals etc. Pretty sad hey :(

Jefferson said it was to be a "wall of separation" between the two. He also felt that theology was not a respectable field to study, and would not allow a department to teach theology when he founded the University of Virginia.

The founding fathers were slave owners. Clearly they were by no means all-wise and all-knowing. They gave this imperfect country a start. It's up to us to improve on it.

So, for that reason I can say in all honesty, I really don't give a damn what they originally designed.

it was designed to keep churches from controlling the government, and to keep the government from controlling the churches-there was, from the start, friction between the two-it's funny (here's my cliff clavin moment) but thomas jefferson, in describing a 'wall of separation' between church and state, was stealing a phrase from roger williams, baptist theologian and founder of the colony of rhode island
