What is it, and how would you know you've actually done it?

Traveling outside the physical form can be very dangerous.
When the etheric properties of man are allowed to separate from the physical form (which some call astral projection) man needs a guide to return safely. One must be guided back so as to maintain the same level of consciousness that one was in, prior to seperation.
This is not my knowledge but that of yogi's that I met both in the east and the west. All of these Yogi's are, or were, well known for there special skills.

This is not something that humans should attempt without an adept assisting!

Sure. I'd astral project over to Scotland right now and visit some of my relatives.

But since there is no such thing I will have to wait for a good rate on airline tickets. Does that count?

OOBE is interesting, and is actually scientifically validated. I have, it's not very pleasant.
