Inspiration is caused by the contraction of the muscles of the diaphragm, causing it to move downwards, thus enlarging the chest cavity. Since pressure is inversely proportional to volume, pressure drops below the outside pressure and air rushes in to equalize the imbalance. Since the process was initiated by muscular contraction, it may be called an active process.

Expiration is essentially the opposite: the diaphragm passively relaxes. Chest volume decreases, causing an increase in air pressure inside the lungs. Higher pressure air inside the lungs rushes out towards lower pressure air outside.

I'm not up for the tutoring thing, but good luck to you.

Never! In fact most of the time I manage to offend people by living exactly as I am without doubt or shame. Those who face my brutal honesty with fortitude become less afraid to be themselves as well.. and everyone benefits. I don't care what anyone thinks of me.. most of the time I'm not even aware of other people paying attention to me. I cannot tell you how many times I've had someone approach me and question why I didn't wave to them or say hi when they saw me somewhere.. My answer always is.. I didn't notice! Because of this people often strive to get my attention, or to impress me..but I'm never impressed by anything less than complete disregard for impressing others. If you aren't yourself, I cannot know you.. and I will waste no time trying to get acquainted with a false impression.

One can actively take deep inspiration and forceful expiration. Otherwise both are reflex actions . Called Hering Breuer reflex.
