My 18th birthday was last month and let me tell you i have been fascinated with tattoos since i could crawl. My strong christian parents however have alwys been highly against even the thought of me getting one. (even though they are from south america they are so strict) I mean i would be "the only person in a plaid jumper, at my private school, with a permanant mark of the devil on my body." I have always told myself that the day i turned 18 i would get a tattoo...even if my parents didnt know about it.
Well since i turned 17 i had begged, pleaded, asked nicely etc. and my parents still refused. So on my 18th birthday seniors got out of school after 2nd pd for some kind of assembly or something. How perfect i thought! so i went down to the tattoo place (after doing countless hrs of research on tats and comparisons of places). I knew exactly what i wanted, a memorial of my cousin who passed away less than a year ago on my back with a bible verse. Well to my despair, when i arrived the guy said it was to detailed to do as a walk in...so i would have to make an appointment and i couldnt get it on my birthday which made me depressd. :(
Well i am a very positive person and i always say, 'live each day as if it was your last.' You are only young once so you gotta be spontaneous and have fun, right? (Plus i wanted to be able to say that i actually got a tattoo on my bday) Since the guy said he had time to do a small tattoo, i chose a ... playboy bunny. I had always joked around with my guy friends about posing in playboy (long story short : i always get in trouble for my shirts being too low and my skirts too short etc.) I decided to put it on the left side of my hip / stomach / whatever, like right above where my jeans would hit... and i didnt even feel it! It is just a black outline, filled in pink, with a pink 'glow' around it. It is so cute! It looks great since my belly button is pierced (at 16) I will never regret it because it will remind me of an awesome time in my life. I will always remember to stay young and have fun....and be a little naughty too. I had a great time getting it and i will always think of my crazy friends and our lttle inside joke.
P.S. A few days later i went back and the guy did an amazing bible verse scripture design on my ankle/ leg to commemorate my cousin. That tattoo i will always treasure and remember the fun times we had together...and the many more we will have in heaven.

Don't get anything until you know for sure what you want. My first tat was a character in just an outline. I don't regret it one bit, in fact I got my second tattoo a few weeks ago and may be adding on to it in a few months sadly ... I knew what I wanted before I went it and they compared what I had to what they had. It happened to be on the wall but I didn't pick it from there. Think about what means the most to you and when it comes to you get it. Being old enough is a right of passage, find what is best and don't rush it, the right design will come to you!

On my 18th birthday I got a memorial tattoo for my dad and grandpa on my leg/ankle, its a butterfly and hummingbird with an eccentric design around them.
If you don't know what you want, don't go yet. Make sure it's a design you love and possibly something that has meaning.
I don't regret any of my tattoos and that's because I put a lot of thought in to them. You shouldn't just get one to get one because that's usually when people regret getting inked.

i have thought of my own designs for all my tats and i have a lot . I personally dont like picking a design off a wall. And they all have deep meaning. with that said i really hope just because your going to be 18 and can get a tat on your own that u chose too get anything spure of the moment because it ''looks cool''. or anything like that. do some thinking, gather ideas. talk it over with the artist and come up with a custom design. u will be much happier with that.

the best advice I have ever had was .... if you can't decide then don't get anything.
I've been wanting a tattoo since my mom said I could have one (17 yrs.) ... well I'm gonna be 19 on the 21st AND I still haven't decided on a design AND I'm glad I haven't gotten one yet simply based on the fact that the longer I have thought about my ideas the less i like them. I wait because i want something I'll LOVE not Like now and have to just live with it.

I found a picture of a celtic cross online, and fell in love with it. It took a long time to figure out exactly what I wanted, but as soon as I saw it I knew! And I don't regret it at all-just make sure you think about it a lot! It will be a part of you forever!

I brought in a design I thought was cool. I found it in a manga and thought it would make a cool tattoo. it cost me $80 to have done and they hurt and you can't squirm. After it is tender and feels like a bad sun burn or carpet burn. it's the design on the lower left corner.

My first was offered free by some guy who (I'm guessing needed to practice on me!)- so I drew up a quick skull out of exitement on my fore-arm & it was a big mistake, yrs later I designed a large paddern to cover it & paid about 150+ bucks to have a pro in a shop to cover it! (I still have to get it colored) -anyways, think of what you want & where you want it for life.

Act in haste, repent at leisure. Keep in mind that tattoos are permanent, and removing them is costly.
