Dogs can see part of the color spectrum, the blue, green and red I think. The rest is shades of gray. The best color ball for a dog is blue and white. To a dog the yellow balls fade into the green grass. That's why they have a hard time seeing a stationary tennis ball.

It's my understanding that dogs do see mostly black, white, and (probably most importantly) shades of grey. And that they also may have some limited color-perception, but they do not see colors as vividly or distinctly as we do.

Think of it as two photos of the same scene ... one taken in black and white, and the other taken in color. In the color photo, we see actual color. In the black-and-white, we perceive color-values. This is why a dog who is told to fetch the "red ball" is able to do so ... because he has been shown the red ball and associates that color-value with the words "red ball". Does he really "see" the color red? Probably not. But he is still able to differentiate colors based on the value of the shade of grey that he sees.

YUP, and red, green ,blue and yellow too.
I have had collies, sable and border collies ALL my life I am 53. I can tell any of them to go get the red ball, the blue ball. the brown lamb, the white one,
Green Frisbees, verses orange.
My shoes, squeak toys, kittens, white orange black, they will gently pick the kittens up and bring them to me.

Absolutely not. They see in color. A dog's perception isn't as good as a human's, but they're eyesight can detect the slightest movements... in color!
