ONE WHO IS CHARGED BY LAW TO KEEP THE PEACE.
IN THE OLD WEST YOU HAD A SHERIFF AND LATER AS THE TOWNS GREW A PEACE OFFICER SINCE WE WERE AT THAT TIME GOING FROM HORSES TO CARS. THEY IN THE NEWLY FORMED CITIES WERE PEACE OFFICERS. SHERIFFS CONTROLLED COUNTY, US MARSHALS CONTROLLED A TERRITORY.
LATER WE HAD A PEACE OFFICE AND THE CONSTABLE CAME INTO BEING FOR THE COURTS RIGHT HAND MAN.

PEACE OFFICER NOW A DAYS REFERS TO ANYONE WHO CARRIES A BADGE AND IS LICENSED TO DO SO BY LAW--MILITARY POLICE AND INFANTRY IN A FOREIGN LAND ARE KNOWN AS A PEACEKEEPING FORCE.

a civilian that has sworn an oath to uphold and obey the laws of his city, state and government.

A public servant that has accepted the responsibilities of representating Law and Order in today's highly complex society, interfering with those that break the laws, harm one another or steal the property of another without due compensation to that person.

In simpler terms: An armed public servant that keeps the peace for everyone that is law abiding. And arrests those individuals that don't.

A peace officer is what they were called before they became the police. They went from keeping the peace in the public as servants to policing the public like servants. Its what happens to any country going from a free state to a police state which is what we are morphing into now.
