Using the concept of Taqiya, lying to avoid persecution? Maybe joining the Catholics, using the Catholic nuns' habit as an explanation why they still wear the veil? Ever heard of this?

I don't think so, because Muslims are ready to get hurt for the sake of Islam,i.e, When we are innocent, we do not hide. we trust Allah and depend on him in protecting us and in helping us. WE ARE PROUD OF OUR RELIGEON!
