I'll be visiting both countries in a few months and I'm wondering what I can use for ID to buy cigarettes/alcohol. I don't really want to carry my passport around, and I doubt British ID cards would be accepted there. So what can I use? Any ideas.

Thanks

Yes, passports are too big to fit in the pocket and too valuable to lose !

Any photo ID will do - Driver license, 18+ card, student ID card etc... doenst matter what country it is from - as long as it's a photo and shows your Date of birth.

My answer is in regards to NZ:

You will find that bars and supermarkets are very strict regarding buying alcohol and cigarettes In New Zealand.

The four only legal acceptable forms of ID under the Sale of Liquor Act are as follows:
• New Zealand Passport
• New Zealand Driver's Licence
• Overseas Passport
• HANZ 18+ photo ID card (18+ card)

Which means, technically, as an overseas citizen you should have your passport as your form of ID.

Ok places may sell you the items with simply an overseas driving licence or a photocopy of your passport. But don’t count on it and don't be surprised if they do refuse you.

I am 28 years old and I get checked for ID on a very regular basis.

BTW, not sure if you are male or female. If you are female you would probably have no problem in bars. Boys have more problems getting served without proper ID.

Adults do not normally require ID to purchase alcohol or cigarettes in Australia.

Sale of these products is restricted to ADULTS 18yrs of age or over. Those of questionable age may be asked to produce ID to satisfy age requirements.

Satisfactory ID might include a passport, drivers licence, or other photographic ID showing your date of birth.

I hope you enjoy your trip to Australia.
Cheers :)

you can use you a drivers licence's or you could use proof of ages card if you have one, and you should not have any problem.
