Form what I gathered, the faith is more about lifestyle & setting an example than worshiping.

So I'd be betting on the "doing the teaching" option.

Hi Wisdom.

One can practice most of what Buddha teaches without worshipping him. He teaches very good things, as we have discussed before, many virtuous things. Yet I do not worship him.

He was a human, yes, a very enlightened one. He was a virtuous person & had much to teach. I strongly suggest people read his teachings.

I am a Christian, and I worship God & His Son, Jesus. Jesus taught us how to live virtuous lives. What Buddha teaches does not contradict this. It only reaffirms Christ's teachings. Buddha was a good teacher.

There are many good teachers in this world. I have met several very good teachers in my lifetime, so far. I do not, however, worship any of them. It is the same with Buddha.

Peace.

Worshiping Buddha or not has no meaning. Buddha is just a teacher but he deserves respect and regard in this sense only. Because , as per his direction , one needs to follow his teachings and practice meditation.
Buddha has asked people to follow these 3 things mainly :
1. Sheelas : No sex(celibacy), No stealing, No intoxicants, No lies and Non-violence and love to all.
2. Samadhi : Practice of meditation for mind sharpening and concentration to keep mind focussed on one area only ,say on breathing.
3. Pragya : In every situation being fully attentive, focussed, maintaining non attachment, being desireless, non-enjoyment and non-aversion.This is called sampajanya(completly aware).

Anything other than these practices is simply extraneous.

story 1
----------
Once Buddha was invited to a preach in a large gathering organised in a house. The owner of the house made lavish arrangements. A large decorated thronelike couch was put up for Buddha and expensive carpets were laid for others.
After seeing this , Buddha refused to sit on that couch and told them to remove all that before he could speak and said that he is an ascetic taken to the vows of poverty & donation , he could not accept being feted like that.

Story 2
------------
On his deathbed, heavenly flowers started falling on him and his body was covered with these. He told his attendent , Ananda , "People will start worshipping Buddha as a ritual with flowers etc., but Buddha is not worshipped in this manner , rather Buddha gets worshipped when his followers practice Sheelas, Samadhi And Pragya."

Buddha did not teach that anybody should worship him! The Buddha taught a method of attaining enlightenment; there is no actual deity in pure Buddhism, however.

Better to practice the tea teachings If one just worships and does not practice the teachings then it is hollow without any substance. If one practices the teachings then they see them from a practical perspective. Buddhists do not worship Buddha but rather we follow his teachings and in a nutshell they are how to avoid suffering.

Happiness in Buddhism is defined as the absence of pain. To practice Buddhism, the less you possess, the less you can lose. You can only lose what you are attached to. So, live like a monk, give up your wealth, and according to Buddhism you should be happy! Possibly even ecstatic!

To worship the teachings of Buddha, to admire them, does nothing. Either you practice the teachings or choose another philosophy.

Like Christianity, all religions demand some kind of sacrifice in order to achieve happiness, enlightenment, paradise, and join with God. All religions start with Faith as their premise. Believe first, think less and less later.

I have been a Buddhist for about 6 years. I know many people that have been their whole lives. None of them worship the Buddha.

You can't apply your Western thinking of worship, prayer, the notion of God, heaven and hell, to Buddhism. Such things don't exist in Buddhism. It is a philosophy, not a religion.

Buddhists do not worship Buddha. They merely study his teachings and follow those that they find are true and helpful.
Google the four noble truths, the eightfold paths and the precepts to learn more of his teachings.

Better to follow the teaching, in the end Buddha will be known as Buddha really is, birth-less and deathless, your own true self.
