I have a 3 month old female kitten, and, since most days I am usually away from home for hours, I am looking into getting another kitten, to keep each other company. I am just wondering, if I should get another female or male? I already have my eye on a 4 month old female at my local shelter. Just not sure if they will get along when they are older, or since they are still kittens, and if raised together, will be friends? What do you all think? thanks in advance!

I encourage you to read the last two questions of this FAQ.
Personally, if I had a female kit and was going to get a second AND i was getting he second so that they two would play with each other and keep each company, I would get a male kitten.
Long term (through adulthood)
Two males get along the best.
One male, one female -- second best
Two females are the least likely to get along
The site does suggest that any combo should work as long as you get them as kittens, but I have not seen this bear out in real life.

I recently just adopted 2 female kittens and they have bonded and love each other. I've known people who have adopted 2 males, and one of each and they all get along. I don;t think gender really matters when they're kittens because they tend to bond easily when they're young and if they grow up together there shouldnt' be any problems between them. Just make sure you get them spayed as soon as they're old enough because you don't want to deal with two females in heat at once. Yikes!

It's true that males tend to be the better choice when adding cats to a home where another cat is established.
Read the following question asked by someone earlier today. It is an example of two sisters raised together since birth and now don't get along. They call adult female cats Queens for a reason! They each need their own kingdom. lol

i think the kitty from the shelter would be perfect! i carried home a 2 month old stray when my 3 kittens at home were 3 months old. They were a little cold but slowly armed up..now they groom each other and are the best of friends :D

That's good of you to adopt. No biggie...I've done that a couple of times before-I've introduced a much younger stray to an older kitten and at first the older one would scratch it, but after a few days they go along just fine. Good luck with what you're doing.

I worked at petsmart and kittens always get along together at that young age that is why if you go into shelters kittens are always together and older cats are seperated. Getting an extra kitten will help your kitten cope with you being gone and she wont grow up being a mean old cat :P
Good luck with your choice

I'm no expert, but can't see how anyone can predict the future behavior of two kittens.
If you already have your eye on the kitten at the shelter, I say go for it, and stop all the worry about the future behavior of the two kittens.
Have fun with your two babies.

a female would be ok. you could get a male but I would definately have one or both fixed.
I think given the age difference only being a month, Im sure they will get along fine.

i could flow forward and get a woman. through fact one element i did no longer like approximately having a male (in my adventure) if yet another unusual male comes around in lots of circumstances. Your male cat ought to commence "marking" his territory. I had a male that did that and he improve into fixed. So i could carry on with a woman. another element i presumed i could inform you approximately. I as quickly as had a woman kitten and that i've got been given her while she improve into youthful. She did each and every thing with me around he abode. We continually sat at the same time and slept at the same time...etc. anyhow while my cutting-edge lady pal moved in with me and her new cat got here alongside. there improve into difficulty.... between my cat & lady pal. The cat had improve into so linked to me that as quickly as my lady pal moved in she grew to enhance into jealous of her. i comprehend it sounds unusual yet genuine. anyhow she hated my lady pal plenty that she could wait till we've been long gone and flow on her facet of the mattress a pee on her pillows. This went on for awhile till I had to discover a sparkling abode for her. So i could get your kitten now and enable them to enhance up at the same time. that's often nicer that way and that they actually won't get into it too plenty for the reason that they are nonetheless kittens. good success!!!!!
