Holy spirit enables a person to do things he otherwise could not do. It is possible for the holy spirit to act upon non-Christians, but its greatest work is performed in connection with the Christian congregation and its adherents.
At this time, it is impossible to be entirely certain of the spirit's involvement in one particular matter. Yet, over time, a true Christian (such as a Jehovah's Witness) gives evidence of being blessed by the holy spirit when his personality continues to become more godly (albeit slowly at times) and when he continues to perform the preaching work (which is impossible to continue without holy spirit).
(Galatians 5:22-23) The fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control.
(1 Peter 1:12) They were ministering the things that have now been announced to you through those who have declared the good news to you with holy spirit sent forth from heaven.

You probably felt joy because you just resisted the impulse to do something that you were trying not to do. It was forward step in a personal battle. I don't believe that the holy spirit came over you at that time. Having that same feeling at another time in your life when you were not studying with the Jw's would not have made you think that you were receiving the holy spirit. You may have felt it without praying. But the fact that you were learning about the holy spirit and thinking about it cause you to associate the feeling with the holy spirit and prayer. I don't remember feeling the holy spirit at any time when I was a JW. And praying now to me does not feel any different than it did back then. Of course there is no sure or scientific way to prove whether it was the holy spirit that caused this or not. It's whatever you want it to be!
And to answer to Stephen M.'s comment, Jehovah Witnesses are Christians and they do not believe that Jesus is God but that he is the son of God. They do not believe in the Trinity.

(2 Corinthians 4:7) . . .However, we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the power beyond what is normal may be God’s and not that out of ourselves.
Holy spirit that Jehovah can give to us is has power too beyond what is normal. It can strengthen us and give us power to do what our fleshly bodies could not achieve on it's own.
Jehovah’s spirit produces good fruitage that helps a Christian to face problems, trials, and temptations. After warning against “the works of the flesh,” the apostle Paul wrote: “On the other hand, the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.”—Galatians 5:19-23.
The holy spirit is not a personality it is an active force that is the most powerful. This force can be used to make creation, resurrect, heal, destroy, strengthen, empower it will do anything that Jehovah purposes.

That is a very good question. Everyday I feel God's Spirit within me and other people. I have met different people and did not know anything about them but, I felt the Holy Spirit within them. Even when I read messages on this forum, I can sense the Holy Spirit coming from a person. I know that may seem so hard to understand but, I do. You just have to know the Lord for yourself and have that experience to know. God bless you.

There’s a lot experiences from JWs who were/are being persecuted and who faced near death or death, where they personally said that they experienced the fruitage of the holy spirit, such as peace at a certain point while they are being beaten, etc. Gal 5:22-23.
Obviously, the God of peace, Jehovah, is helping them. Phil 4:7.

I have not as one of Jehovah's Witnesses felt any sorts of feelings, but I have prayed for things (in harmony with Jehovah's will) and my prayers have been answered. I prayed to find a husband 32 years ago and found him. We have been married ever since, and very happily. We recently went through some difficult times financially and asked Jehovah for help through prayer (the problem was dragging us down spiritually as well) and in a few weeks we got a call from a fellow witness who needed us to move to where he was and work for him. It was a dream job that we never thought we would ever have and the congregation here is wonderful, just what we needed to build us up spiritually. So yes, I truly believe that Jehovah's holy spirit has a hand in arranging things for our betterment as long as we are faithful to him.

What people think is the Holy Spirit might just be emotionalism, some churchs get quite excited during their meetings, and Satan also keeps transforming himself into an angel of light. What you felt might have been the "helper" that Jesus spoke of to help you deal with your problem. I know that longstanding obstacles were removed from my path when I started studying so that I was able to bring my life in line with his requirements. I hope you are thinking of starting a study again. Not to worry, Jehovah will send someone to your house!
I have to tell you a story. I am an animal lover lately, and I saw a dog running lose at the bank on day, going from person to person as if looking for its master. So I pulled into the lot and tried to get the dog in my car. While driving down the alley, I came across some workers in the back of the furniture store and asked them to put the dog in my car, which they did. It was a young german shepherd, I drove home and when my dogs saw the other dog they started barking wildly. I said to myself, "Well I can't put him in the yard, I better drive him to the shelter." The shelter is over 15 miles away, and as I was driving I was thinking, "I don't know if Jehovah approves of me saving these animals all the time."
When I got to the shelter, I went in and told the lady the situation and asked if she had a lease. She pointed to where they were, I took one and went out and got the dog. As I brought it in, a lady was coming out of the back where the animals were, she looked down at the dog and said, "Sophie, Sophie, is that you?" It turns out that it was her dog. I felt Jehovah had let me know that he did approve of my saving his animals. What were the chances that I would be bringing the dog in at exactly the time that she was looking for it? The feeling I got was probably similar to how you felt with your cigarette episode.

The Holy Spirit is active all the time and it is when we as human beings recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives that we feel the presence physically, mentally, and spiritually. Paul says that our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit.

God has an open channel of communication with you, whether you are a Jehovah's Witness or from another Christian denomination. If you prayed to God wholeheartedly, He will do wonders wit you.

The Holy Spirit of God helps me to communicate with God. It works that way with me that I might read the Bible verses and have a new understanding of what it means. And then other time I read the very same thing, and then again it talks to me different way and I feel that God is communicating with me with a specific issue I have been dealing with. It is quite amazing!
