Kittens, yes in that they want attention, will sit and meow for it, they will climb you and anything else, they will attack your feet while you sleep, they want to be with you at all times and you will find yourself yelling "GET OFF THAT!" many times a day as the kitten explores his new surroundings.
I suggest putting away anything breakable until the cat reaches the age of two.
Older cats are not high maintenance like a dog would be, but if they reallly love you, they can be annoying little pains in the butts sometimes.

Compared to what?
They are lower maintenance then say, a dog, horse, or a ferret, but higher then a hamster, fish or a rabbit.
Kittens are definitely higher maintenance then an adult cat. Often times they come litter box trained, but you still need to clean out their litter box every day, give them fresh water and food, play with them, and socialize them with other people and animals so you don't end up with a scaredy cat, for lack of a better term.
They need things to scratch on, to be played with, and LOTS of attention. I can guarantee; you will be woken up regularly in the middle of the night by a small, nocturnal furball who wants your attention, and don't even think about locking them out of your room unless you want something meowing at your door all night.
You'll need to put your breakables in cupboards until the kitten is two or three years old, you will have something grabbing anything stringy in your house and attacking it. I can’t tell you how many times my cats have pounced on me at the wrong moment and I have gotten poked by my sewing needle ;).
Say goodbye to anything but the sturdiest of fake plants, much less real ones. Dishes will need to be put away promptly unless you want your kitten knocking them on the floor.
They are very independent and only want attention when and where they want it. They go where they please and please where they go.
They'll need shots and to be spayed/neutered, as well.
The most important thing you have to have around cats is a sense of humor. If you think you will find such things as your cat sitting on top of your TV/Computer Monitor, batting at anything on the screen that moves, having your feet being pounced on under the comforter while you are trying to fall asleep, or having your cat decide that the magazine you are reading would be a perfect spot to take a nap annoying, then a cat isn’t for you. If you think you’d grin and shake your head when your kitty does this kind of stuff, then go back to whatever you were doing, then a cat just might be for you. :)
Think on it, do a ton of research, try some good cat books, like kittens for dummies or cats for dummies (that isn’t an insult, those are just really good cat books), and see if you think a cat could be a good match for you.
Good luck, I hope this helps!

Cats are very low maintenance and independant, especially compared to dogs. As long as a cat is litter trained, you don't really need to do anything except keep it clean and fed. And if you need to go away for a couple days they are fine to stay home alone as long as you provide enough food and water to last until you get home.
Kittens, as with any baby (human or animal) can be higher maintenance because they are at the age where they are discovering new things, and they have claws and are very playful. when i brought my kittens home they liked to play at all hours of the night and wake us up and scratch things. They also eat a lot more than adult cats and use the litter box mroe so you need to clean it more often. Be prepared to spend lots of money on toys and food and vet bills, and spend time training it not to scratch things.

It is very easy to train kittens, you show your kitten where the litter box is 1 time, mind you have to put the kitten in the box, and the kitten should go to the box by him/herself... Cats are very independent. As long as you keep fresh water and food, change water at least once a day, your cat will live a long healthy life... But you really should get 2 kittens so they have some company, both male or both female. that is if you want to have a lot of cats than get 1 male and 1 female...

They can be. If you get a kitten, you don't really know what it's going to turn into. If you get an adult, any issues will already be known.
Case in point - I got two kittens that were about 3 months old. One is in totally rude health, the other is something of a problem child who requires the occasional butt bath and has to be fed a high-priced diet to keep her digestive system happy.
The foundation to good health is good food. If you feed them well, they should be pretty low maintenance for the most part and your vet visits will be at a minimum.

I believe cats are high maintenance. My cat is picky with what he wants to eat, we HAVE to hold him, pet him, Love him... or he'll go crazy. Cleaning the litter box can be a big pain also. Most take care of themselves for the most part (That's if you have a laid back cat.Don't need much. Just give me my food and get away. lol.) But the very affectionate ones can be a handful. They require a lot of love. If you get a great cat with a fun personality... all the "maintenance" is worth it.

Kittens are harder than adult cats in the same way that puppies are harder than adult dogs.
The biggest misconception is that cats are easy and require very little care/attention.
They don't need to be walked, but they do have their own personality and can get frustrated or angry if they don't get enough attention or their needs are not met.
Some cats need more interaction than others. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs and the cats require almost as much attention as the dogs.

IF the kitten is already box trained then they aren't really high maintenance. My cats are lazy cats they only come to me when they want attention.

Kittens and cats are not high maintance because you can be gone all day with food and water and they will be just fine.
