Could someone point out where this is in the Bible? I can't seem to find it. As best I can figure we die and then we are judged. Not die and spend time in purgatory.
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

None of the verse supplied support purgatory. The verses about works being burned up say works not the person. It says man's works are tried not the man.

Pastor Billy - I actually wear blue jeans and t-shirts to church. God sees me 7 days a week not just when I am at church. He knows who I am. I do not need to look fancy to be accepted by Him.

Purgatory is a slap to the face of Jesus. He completed all the work of atonement on the cross. If there is purgatory, then Christ did not finish the work, and He is a deceiver when He said "It is Finished!"
The burning is of our works, not our soul.

Pastor Billy says: I see you anti-Catholic bigots are working overtime today.
the teaching of a purification before entry into heaven was taught even by the Jews before Christianity. all thoughout the NT the understanding of this purgation can be found.
I fear you have little knowledge of what purgatory is in the first place and therefore have no idea of what you are arguing against. Take for example the forgiveness of sins, do you believe that happens in purgatory? if so you'd better think again and study up on it before attacking what must happen before one enters heaven.
One of the most well know Protestant Evangelical writers C.S. Lewis believed in... purgatory.
think of it this way, Why do you put on your best Sunday suit when entering the church of the Lord if you're already purified? how less prepared are you going to be on the hope of entering a heavenly celebration??? Nothing shall enter unto Mt. Sion unclean. unlike non-Catholic doctrine, early Christian doctrine understood the purification that was required before entry into a godly place. and unlike Luther who started this whole mess called Protestantism, Catholicism teaches we are not merely covered in snow (or in the case of the KKK a white sheet) as Protestantism does but we are made pure and transformed completely without any stain of sin and that is when and how we most completely take on the divine nature of Christ as written of by the apostle Peter in scripture.

Heb 12:23 ... souls in heaven are perfect.
Col 1:24; 2 Sam 12:13-14 ... “extra” suffering.

There is a time between death and the resurrection and Judgment, where the spirits of the righteous go to a place called Paradise and the spirits of the wicked go to a place known as hell. I seen a very good example of scriptural references in one of the answers before mine. However L.D.S. do not call it Purgatory but in most ways I think it is the same thing. We call it the spirit world. There many who never had the chance to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ will be able to except him as their savior. That is why the Church of Jesus Christ L.D.S. does baptisms for the dead.

Purgatory, like many other Catholic dogmas, is based on a misunderstanding of the nature of Christ’s sacrifice. Catholics view the Mass / Eucharist as a re-presentation of Christ’s sacrifice because they fail to understand that Jesus’ once for all sacrifice was absolutely and perfectly sufficient (Hebrews 7:27). Catholics view meritorious works as contributing to salvation due to a failure to recognize that Jesus’ sacrificial payment has no need of additional “contribution” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Similarly, Purgatory is understood by Catholics as a place of cleansing in preparation for Heaven because they do not recognize that because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we are already cleansed, declared righteous, forgiven, redeemed, reconciled, and sanctified.

Purgatory was a doctrine made up by the Catholic church to get money. They taught that you could buy your way out of purgatory by giving money to the church. They stopped teaching that particular doctrine when people wised up to the scam.
