It is not a religion just like theism is not a religion. There are theists that have a religion and theists that do not, just like some atheists have religions and some do not. Isn't the Christian religion about its teachings or is about the belief in a deity only. If it is only the belief in a deity that defines your religion wouldn't that make it the same as Muslim or any other religion with belief in a deity?

That is the point John if atheism is the religion then so is theism. A belief in a deity does not define a religion. Religion follows teachings of a person or deity.

I think that they just so can't comprehend the idea of NOT having a "religion", that their brains will make anything that they can attempt to define as a "belief"= religion. Even if they have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to define something as a "belief", (ex: "NOT believing in God is a BELIEF!") that will be enough for them. It automatically becomes a religion if there's nothing better there TO call a "religion".
It's simply the complete inability to comprehend that there are people out there that don't have a "religion". They can't wrap their brains around that.

It's not so much atheists believe in no gods but that they just don't have a belief in anything. Believe implies that you think something exists whereas an atheist thinks no god exists. Atheism is to gods as most adults are to Santa or the tooth fairy.

Edit:
It's not having believe because there is no proof.

Anything that has the suffix, 'ism', has a religous conotation. The concept of atheism, is not a concept of 'god', but the person who denies the existance of god, has an opinion, and that is the religous aspect, the opinion itself.

You can answer questions about God, any way you choose. But you can't change the question, it's eternal...

Some people just cannot imagine anyone not having a religion.

"If atheism is a religion, then: Silence is a language. Dead is a state of mind. Hunger is a gourmet meal. Health is a disease. Bald is a hair colour."

Because they're stupid for not realizing that Atheism means not believing in any gods whatsoever....do we have a god??? nope. A religion is when you have a god....so therefore, Atheism is NOT a religion.

religions seek to maintain power over the masses by religifying everyone... even science went through religification..... in religions there is always bickering and disagreement... it was designed that way so the truth that would destroy all religions wouldn't get heard

The real issue is how one defines "religion". If one defines it as a set of common beliefs and practices generally held by a group of people. You could argue that atheism is a religion. Atheists constitute a group of people who have common beliefs and practices.

It's because people have a certain mind-set.....and until they educate themselves that mind-set isn't going to change.

I'm an Atheist.....and when people refer to it as a religion I correct them but for me it's not a biggie.

I know what I'm about and that's all that really matters.
